Description I apologize for it being on line paper. I drew it during algebra. So much for taking pride in my work, lol. Anyway, These are a few (very few) basic styles that I attempted to display for anyone that needed a reference. I know I had trouble with eyes when I first started out. e-e

:Explanations and HELP:

#1. This was the first one that I drew, I HATED these... It was the kind of serious, darker, yet still beautiful... kind of thing that I definitely had trouble with. It's very difficult not to go completely bland and boring when trying to draw a more serious style. (Ex: #4) So try to keep thin lines, really round off the curves that you DO make, and make sure the edges are sharp and crisp. NOTICE: There was a giant black BLOB at the top left corner of this sheet before I cropped it. That was because I repeatedly wore down one side of the lead piece for a sharper point. This creates darker lines and it's easier to create detail in smaller areas.

#2. This is a slightly cute, yet, more NORMAL type that I tend to use often. It's great for female characters, or children. Be sure to shade dark near the base of the pupil and create a clearly visible outline.

#3. This is a very cute, I think. I would never use it in any emotional picture if you are trying to create feeling. This can be used to create the innocent look in a child and could easily be used for chibis. Have a well-rounded, oval shape, the pupil almost always in contact with the edge of the eye, and shade dark.

#4. This could easily be used for a male character. Yeah I know it's emotionless and bland... e-e but it's the best I could do. Make sure it's more of a rectangle shape with a little more than half-circle pupil. I always make sure the eyebrow is a bit more flat than the other female ones.

#5. This is the adorable school girl, you know, the one you see skipping down the sidewalk in a school uniform with a tiny mini-skirt, wearing a loose tie and having a book-bag slung over her shoulder. lol. Yes, that one. The perky one with tons of eye lashes. xD Make it look just like THAT. And making her blush for no reason at all always makes it cuter, lol. I'm serious. that's just the style. Closed eyes aren't that difficult so just keep it simple and dark. And remember: Curving up like an arch gives the character a happier disposition, down, the opposite. e-e Yes, I actually forgot that, ok?

#6. For a crying character, have lots of different shine marks, and depending how hard he/she is crying, you may need to close the eye more or less. But when someone cries they tend to close their eyes a bit more or raise their cheeks. So pay attention to how the tears flow. I like to have a stream of tears, because it's just easier for me, but others prefer individual tears or, chibi style. (where the tear either just lingers at the edge of the eye, or the character is completely bawling, forming puddles around their feet. lol) Back to the point: ALWAYS... ALWAYS ALWAYS curve out before down, when using a small stream of tears. This creates the image of the tears running down the jaw line and gives shape to the face. It's a really simple way to do that without having to shade too much.

#7. Looking up, just keep the bottom of the pupil away from the bottom of the eye. As long as you do that, it shouldn't be too bad.

#8. This style is more of something you'd find in a comedy anime series I think... the very oval shaped pupil with plenty of space between it and the eye lashes. Makes it easier to portray funny expressions. xD

#9. Last one. I wasn't sure how to really make someone look scared or wide eyed when I first started drawing, but later I found it was pretty simple. To make a character have wide eyes - you don't necessarily have to make the eye, itself bigger - Just make the pupil a bit smaller and thin it down a bit, then curve it inward. Also, e-e for dramatic effect I like to add the little curvy line thingy's below the eyes. ^^ lol. Looks better to me than without.

I hope I could help. e-e I'm not that good at explaining things in my opinion. Anyway. YAY.

There are obviously many different ways to draw anime eyes in many different styles. And naturally your style evolves. For example I draw my eyes much differently than I did when I made this tutorial. It's purely for the benefit of the people who wish to learn from my progress and mistakes.

..ehe, you know, in photoshop.. with all styles in each eye.. can it be inked in photoshop, that can look natural like your drawing...

dawnyshurtz In reply to MiniJuliet [2011-11-17 05:45:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, just make sure that you're using a tablet or other smooth tool with the mouse(if tablet make sure it's pressure sensitive in photoshop). Gives it that natural look. I do most of my Anime digital now. So the answer is yes, if you do it right.

Cool, this'll be helpful with making my eye's more "shiny".
Oh and did you draw them using a black pencil crayon, or just a normal pencil?

Okay thanks, been trying to figure out what would be best to draw with, so I can shade the best.

With regular pencils sometimes it comes out too light and rounded. But with a mechanical pencil (as mentioned in the artist comments) you can wear down the lead to make a flat edge (good for shading) and a sharp edge (good for fine lines). I suppose you can do this with a regular pencil too, but in my experience it takes longer and the results aren't quite the same. If you like the way it looks here, I recommend mechanical.

This is really going to help me as I practice my drawing.

I recently started drawing a few months ago, and everyone says I'm really good. The only flaws I can find are the chin is never centered, the nose, and the eyes. This is going to help me so much.
