This is a girl's artstyle, you must be female.

What?

KryssenRobinson In reply to Daycolors [2018-04-28 19:33:25 +0000 UTC]

I noticed many artists of the same gender draw characters the same way.

Perhaps not in the same"art-style", but many features are drawn in such a similar fashion that if you pay attention to those details, you'll be able to tell if a character was drawn by a guy or a girl.

I can describe it like this:

If you give a blank figure to a male, then give that same figure to a female and tell them to make a human from that.

-Boys would grab a knife and carve the features in.
-Girls would grab a pen and draw the features on.

Nothing wrong with either method, just a unique observation.

huh, that's cool, I guess? I don't think certain art styles are limited to one gender though, I think it's more how you see the character in your mind that determines how it looks when you draw them! ^^ I know many ladies who draw in a fierce, chiseled style and many dudes who draw in a more calm, finessed style-- I guess my impetus is that I don't think there is any true way to judge an artist's gender by their work, it's more of a way to judge how they view the characters that they drew! ^^

KryssenRobinson In reply to Daycolors [2018-04-28 20:12:19 +0000 UTC]

"I think it's more how you see the character in your mind that determines how it looks when you draw them"

I totally agree, when an artist tries to draw a character they visualize in their head, they produce a drawing with their own unique arts style.
In doing so, I believe some of the same features are subconsciously added to every character despite the artist's intention.

"I know many ladies who draw in a fierce, chiseled style and many dudes who draw in a more calm, finessed style"
I'd love to check out those artists if you have any links, see if what your suggesting is true.

"I don't think there is any true way to judge an artist's gender by their work, it's more of a way to judge how they view the characters that they drew!"

While I agree with the second part about how you can judge a person based on their artstyle, I disagree and say most males have similar tendencies and patterns when drawing their characters, just the same as females.

And by dissecting and using these observations we can further examine gender differences in the minds of artists.

Daycolors In reply to KryssenRobinson [2018-04-29 00:40:18 +0000 UTC]

But what will you use these findings for? I think it's better to keep an open mind with styles than to divide them by their gender tendencies, it keeps the art world a little friendlier!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KryssenRobinson In reply to Daycolors [2018-04-29 03:36:27 +0000 UTC]

"But what will you use these findings for?"
Just to examine gender differences in the minds of artists. There doesn't really need to be any more reason than just to find out more.

"I think it's better to keep an open mind with styles than to divide them by their gender tendencies, it keeps the art world a little friendlier!"

...With all due respect, what the heck are you talking about?

Art styles can be different or similar, and by dissecting the differences between artstyles from artists we can further improve each other's drawing skills.
Figuring out that the creator's gender is a qualifying factor on the artist's characters, is just another path we can use to determine similar emotions and tendencies between artists. When finding more in common about eachother's artstyles we can communicate about these details to help each other improve.

In this case "Keeping an open mind"would infer ignorance, and restrain you (and other artists) from increasing the quality of your work.

-Whether it's due to our ages, countries, or even genders we must embrace the differences in our art, not ignore them.

Daycolors In reply to KryssenRobinson [2018-04-29 04:09:31 +0000 UTC]

based on your last statement there and my last statement from my previous reply I think we are on the same page at least about that part? and that's cool, I can respect that. the rest not quite as much, I disagree with allowing gender to play such a large role in analyzing art, but I can respect embracing differences.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KryssenRobinson In reply to Daycolors [2018-04-29 19:16:10 +0000 UTC]

As long as we can agree that a majority of female artist's draw a certain way that differs from how males draw, then we're good.

It does make a neat "magic trick" when I correctly guess an artist's gender.

Speaking of which, I was right wasn't I?
-You are a girl.

Daycolors In reply to KryssenRobinson [2018-04-29 22:30:35 +0000 UTC]

Why is gender so important here? I guess that's what I've been trying to get at all along with my curiosity, but at this point it's starting to fade a little bit...
I'm still wondering, is the reason you commented in the first place:

-because you're lonely and looking to make friends? because I usually just prefer to chat casually instead of having a trite discussion, I think most people do-- if you want to make friends feel free to just send a friendly hey there to someone, I think that may work better!Β

-Or if you're more into the research aspect I think you might get better results from starting a thread to get results from more than just one random person like me, it also takes less work since you only have to start one thread instead of commenting on a bunch of different people's art which can seem a bit out of the blue,

-or if you're just bored I can definitely recommend some good games or other things that may be more interesting than hanging around comment sections all day!

and if you're still asking me you don't seem all that certain about your deduction-- I think there may be better and simpler magic tricks out there to use! ^^

KryssenRobinson In reply to Daycolors [2018-04-30 02:57:42 +0000 UTC]

Just saying there is a correlation with artstyle and gender.
-Nothing wrong with that.

"Why is gender so important here?"
Not quite sure what you mean by that,

If you mean to ask "Why are you so focused on genders?"
Then I just have to say I'm not. I just like finding differences with artstyles and how they relate to the artist. Genders happens to be a very common factor.

If you mean why does gender affect artstyles?
I don't know, perhaps it's a result of the relationship between the different hormones and life experiences between males and females.

"-because you're lonely and looking to make friends? because I usually just prefer to chat casually instead of having a trite discussion, I think most people do-- if you want to make friends feel free to just send a friendly hey there to someone, I think that may work better! "

"Yep you got me, totally lonely, I'm just sitting here at the bottom of an empty abyss..."

-Yeah no actually.
I can assure you this is not my intention.

Β If you read my first comment, I merely asked if you were female based off the artistic design of your characters.
A simple yes would have sufficed, and I would have left a comment like "Awesome, I was able to guess you're a girl because your artstyle is ...etc."

I don't often go onto artwork on Deviantart and request to make friends.

-If you wish to be friends, I prefer facebook messenger.

On another note, I comment on a lot of other artwork, with suggestions for improvements.

Example:
fav.me/db8k6j5

"-Or if you're more into the research aspect I think you might get better results from starting a thread to get results from more than just one random person like me, it also takes less work since you only have to start one thread instead of commenting on a bunch of different people's art which can seem a bit out of the blue,"

All part of the plan actually, I'm compiling a list of artists and artwork as I guess the artist's gender.
With enough testing I can make a video covering this unique topic.

"or if you're just bored I can definitely recommend some good games or other things that may be more interesting than hanging around comment sections all day!"

You know, I have a literal shelf of games labeled "To Play" that I do not have time for.

I work on animations which eat up a lot of my time, here's my animation channel if you're interested:
www.youtube.com/user/YowLifePr…

"and if you're still asking me you don't seem all that certain about your deduction-- I think there may be better and simpler magic tricks out there to use!"

-I should mention I wanted you to answer to make things easier when I make the video discussing Gender differences in art.

It seems to me you're very uncomfortable with the realization that gender differences in artwork is a possible idea, and wish to withhold your gender.

Look if you don't want to answer, that's fine, I just took a screenshot of your Profile-page for proof.

-------------

Throughout this "comment ladder" I don't think you ever thought of me as an intelligent person, but as some lump at a computer who's "wasting his time".

If that is the case, then I do have a bit of criticism for you.

Listen to everyone, even if what they're saying sounds like an insult, they may have a unique and important point. Because anyone's opinion can be better than yours. By taking the time to think about and understand it, you can improve not only your art, but yourself.

In other words,
Embrace change, have an open mind, and believe in the fact that you're not perfect and must continue to improve.

This may not have started with a critique, but it sure ended with one.

Best of luck,

-Kryssen
