Jim was closing in on Beth, but at an excruciatingly slow rate. He knew that seconds were precious and he was losing them quickly. Even though leaving the aircraft later that Xena, they almost caught up to Beth at the same time. Xena took the safer approach, and slowed herself well in advance. Adrenaline was surging through Jim’s veins. He flared his body at the last possible moment, and collided with Beth’s a lot harder than he had intended. Upon contact, he immediately wrapped his arms around her body, as did she. Their bodies melded into one as they tumbled out of control like a ball shot out of a cannon. Xena engaged herself in the action and grabbed a hold of Beth’s legs. The tumbling rate slowed until all three of them were stabilized. With the easy part over, Jim had to now get Beth into the chute. She had clambered onto him like a drowning person trying to get to the top of a buoy. Shock and survival instinct had a full grip on her, and the false sense of security was pointless as they were all still plummeting to the ground. Her terrified death grip was so tight that Jim was having difficulty maneuvering his body, and her screams were piercing through the roar of the wind.
