Nice shot, It feels really direct. After reading your comment to the person above, it made me think of Robert Mapplethorpe's self portrait [link] ... really great idea

There's a certain sense of seriousness in this picture despite the suburban attire, the nose ring and other piercings. some might claim, but I don't: your look doesn't suggest anything, but it is, in a philosophical sense, deep. The way you combine the expression and that you are holding human skull that lacks any pigment, firstly, makes me sway off from my initial reactions to the photograph, and foremostly, change my interpretation attached to it.
I first saw it as a mindless snapshot with a naΓ―ve symbol, the skull, representing mortality and that combined with the suburban style, I thought this was about living your life while you're still young. But I've begun to change my way of thinking after the initial cursory glance. I think of the skull as a means to convey humanity that we're all skulls. Fragile fuckers with a history of a few ten millennia, pigmentless bastards on our way to death, hell or whatever you want to believe that comes after life β however you would define life. Be it how it may, we're all going to be dead in a hundred years or so, and some of us humans want to live as much as possible, and apparently, some of us want to have as much as sex as possible. Some of us want to see walls broken down, some of us want to blow the walls down. And some of us want to become color blind to totally aesthetic values used to bring about hate, poverty and loads of conflicts. I don't know whether or not the author considered this a snapshot or not, I see this as a racial criticism towards humanity's naΓ―vety. If we can't see beoynd our own superficialities, why the hell should we be even considering the concept life-out-of-Earth?
Having said that, I am positive the dramatic effect of this picture would probably enjoy a boost if you were to force it into a black&white photograph. Totally up to you, of course.

actually when i first posted this picture it had a complete different description. when i took it i was sick of the fact that the news loves to talk about all the horrible ways people can die, and expecially since i happen to have hiv i get quite sick of some of the 'dont-have-unprotected-sex' commercials that come on in ny that pretty much have a tagline of 'what you don't know can kill you', so when i took the pic it was more of a 'fuck you death' type thing...

hah. well, to each their own, i guess. not knowing a background indeed did have an important impact on what i interpreted. would i have known that you have HIV, i'd have thought to relate this to the photograph. thanks for the enlightment though.

I like the positioning of your head and the skull. It's almost as if they counter each other, and the framing works really well to draw attention to exactly what you want to be seen. Wonderful self-portrait.

Meep, scary skull! lol. But I like the creativity thought out in the picture - and the lighting is excellent!
