Description I want to know which starship most people find more terrifying? How long could you survive on each, and which one was scariest the first time you played the game they were in? Its the USG Ishimura vs. the UNN Von Braun!

Men, I don`t know if you know. Dead Space was going to be actually System Shock 3 before the developer change the history line.

The Ishimura originally was to be the Von Braun decades ago after SS2 events. See in your picture the similarities.

I don't saying that dead space sucks or something bad about that franchise. I love both games and I hope one day see a New System Shock game and Dead Space 4.

I would choose the Ishimura, mainly because I love how it looks. Plus, Dead Space could easily be the scariest game I played the first time I played it, due to head shots not being worth jack. That said, Von Braun was cool and all, but the Ishimura is my preferred choice.

The thought of the AI of the Von Braun going nuts is scary, but to me, the fact that the Ishimura is a dead ship, seems even more creepy. Also the logs in Dead space I liked more, due to the creepy cult surrounding the monsters and the evil Dr Mercer.

In my opinion, both had creepy enemies and both had creepy atmosphere, for the Ishimura the whispers in the bathroom, the insane survivor encounters, and the necromorphs crawling in the vents. Whereas the Von Braun had the ghost encounters, the human mutants begging you to kill them, the many whispering for you to join them, your "ally" SHODAN, the announcments by Xerxes, and the fact the other two surviving humans leave the ship. In terms of atmosphere, both nail it, the Ishimura is an old mining vessel so there are creaks and many other sound effects, but the Von Braun is a newer ship so not that much noise to it but there's always that worry that there is an enemy around the corner or that you will be spotted by the security cameras. In terms of environment i prefer the Von Braun because i felt there was much more variety in the ship, like a shopping center for the crew members, the medical center and a sensual robot area (i hope i got it right it was the area with the pictures of the men and women on it which you had to pay nanites to get in) and a another ship, the Rickenbacker, attached to it thought you did get to explore the military vessel that crashed into the Ishimura. (though i might be a bit biased because the Ishimura was a mining vessel and didn't offer much recreation) All in all i preferred them both each are a different take on the ghost ship spectrum.

Indeed. Although it was sort of successful, I think it had more influence than we give it credit for.

Well the USG Ishimura had those zombie monsters which the only way to kill them was to cut off there arms, legs, head and let's not for get that annonying Dr. Challus Mercer who tried to screw anything up. On the UNN Von Braun there was Hybids, Cybe Borg Wifes, Killer Robots, Monkeys with PSI powers, The Many and Shodan that evil AI I would pick Von Braun better chance of getting out alive then on Ishimura

the Necromorphs might kill you with a zombie baby then turn you into a monster, but the Many can subvert you while you're still alive.
My vote goes to the Von Braun

Fullmetal-Fox [2011-04-03 14:09:45 +0000 UTC]

if i would have to chose between the Von Braun and the Ishimura, i would chose the Von Braun in scary factor... having a crazy AI with a god complex calling you meatsack, guiding you through the ship, while your implants pick up psionic ghosts seeing what horrors the crew faced, getting nightmare visions as the hive mind of the parasite is present in your mind, telling you that "your song isnt ours, you serve the machine, your song has to be silenced" thats is just much more mind twisting horror thats space zombies attacking you...

I love both games, but a remake of System Shock 2 made with todays Graphics and Audio would kick Dead Spaces butt

I've felt that way also. It seems weird to me that Steam hasn't put both System Shock games up for sale on their website. I'm sure they would get a ton of hits.

I think it's because they're so obsolete by now they won't work with the new OS' windows has.

Don't know much about the Von Braun, but I've been on the Ishimura... TWICE now... Second time it looked like it was being fumigated and with all the lights out and some places lit by neon, it looked WAY more haunted.

Actually, the matter is more complicated than what they told you about. Warning, spoilers ahead.

In the first part of the game, you faced a rogue AI, called SHODAN, that took control over Citadel space station and either killed or mutated the crew and decided to wipe out human population on Earth. She (SHODAN is usually referred to as "she", because her "avatar" is a woman's face and she speaks in female voice) was stopped then, but some of her genetic experiments survived, and were jettisoned from Citadel in a space pod, that 30 years later crash-landed on planet Tau Ceti V. 42 years later, humans send Von Braun (which is the first ship in history with FTL capability) to her maiden flight. It reaches Tau Ceti V and, well... the crew brings SHODAN's "creations" onboard. Those creations, a common consciousness that calls itself "The Many", take over Von Braun and either kill or possess (or just consume) the crew members. SHODAN itself is not directly involved into this - however, it appears that her "copy" survived in the same pod that carried her "creations", and was brought onboard Von Braun too. Through most of the game, you follow her orders in order to destroy The Many. After it is done, SHODAN turns on you.

And in case of freaky monsters... The most common type of enemy are the hybrids - crew members infected by a parasitic worms called annelids. Those worms literally chew into their heads, controlling their motor functions - those humans are no longer able to control their actions, but still patrially aware of what is happening to them. That's why they often howl "kill meee!", when you attack them - they want you to put an end to their misery.
Other freaky monsters are cyborg midwives - female members of the crew, who were "transformed" into horrible cyborgs by one of scientists aboard Von Braun (who was possessed by The Many). Their legs were removed and replaced with cybernetic "prosthesis", while the upper part of their bodies, while mostly intact, has part of the skin ripped off, particularly on their faces (their lips are ripped off, exposing their teeth).

And yes, you may ecounter "ghosts" during the game (the mental projections of crew members, who died recently), another nice thing are audio logs left by (usually deceased) members of the crew - sometimes they are really creepy.
Oh yeah, and SHODAN herself... the moment, when she reveals herself for the first time, is one of the creepiest scenes in computer gaming history.

Fullmetal-Fox In reply to AlaskanHighlander [2011-04-03 14:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the Cyborgs looked kinda scary. but there was also a type of hive minded worm parasite that turned the a part of the crew in zombie like creatures and some in big monsters.
Ive played System Shock 1 and 2, and Dead Space 1 and 2, and i have to say, Dead Space is scarrier since it spots more horror like creatures and better graphics to display them, but if i would have to chose between the Von Braun and the Ishimura, i would chose the Von Braun in scary factor... having a crazy AI with a god complex calling you meatsack, guiding you through the ship, while your implants pick up psionic ghosts seeing what horrors the crea faced, getting nightmare visions as the hive mind of the parasite is present in your mind, telling you that "your song isnt ours, you serve the machine, your song has to be silenced" thats is just much more mind twisting horror thats space zombies attacking you...
