Description Long story, short, I was invited to participate in a biweekly artistic adventure...and this is what happened.

The category for this time around was: Jabberwocky. If you are not familiar with this tale: [link]

After reading this, I couldn't get this image out of my head. It took me about 7 hours (give or take) to turn this out. Basically, this is Alice waiting for the Jabber to come out so she can slay it. I took the Disney version of Alice and gave her an anime/emo twist. The sword was inspired by a Kingdom Heart keyblade. The Jabber came out of my head and ripped it's way through the paper.

This whole piece was done on the computer. Sketched by mouse, cleaned up with my tablet and colored/tweaked in Photoshop.

P.S. - The Jabber will be in my nightmares tonight...

*UPDATED: I wasn't satisfied with the lighting, so I changed it and re-posted.

God I wish I had 7 hours to draw MY submission with.

This is really great, Dani! I like it a lot. You took the concept of 'jabberwocky' and put your own brand on it. Bravo.

That being said, I'll do my best to give an honest critique on what things I notice about the piece. (I'm not a professional artist so take everything with a grain of salt)

The biggest thing that pops out at me is the difference between the girl, and the monster. I obviously know that you have a lot of experience in the anime genre and it really shows here. But the downside is, it completely eclipses the monster. You have this beautifully drawn girl, long blond hair, short skirt, badass sword and she's ready to kill a cartoon set of eyes and teeth. I really like the approach you took with the monster, thumbs up on the concept of eyes and teeth, along with the hand reaching around, but it's just not on par with the girl. The only problem that causes is this kind of lop-sided effect. I think that if you took more time with the monster, did some research, that kind of thing, you have plenty of artistic ability to draw something a lot more creepy and up to par with your 'alice'. (I say this mainly cuz I know you have plenty of time before the deadline!)

Minor things about the girl I notice, one or two aspects seem a bit lop-sided. Basically just her skirt and chest. They are very minor and I don't know if they're intentional or not. Figures aren't my thing.

There are also some spots on the tree up near the monsters hand that I'm not quite sure how to interpret. Only noticed them when purposefully trying to find things.

Anyway, overall, two thumbs up. Great concept and great artsmanship. Or artswomanship. If either of those are words.

Hope this helped!

First off, thank you SO MUCH for the critique. All points well received.

The monster totally needs more work. I had the idea just to have the background completely dark with just some evil eyes...but it seems that he wants to come alive as well. I think I will grant his wish.

As for Alice, the skirt off-balance was on purpose, however, her chest was not...lol. Those will be tweaked when I go back and work on the Jabber.

The monster's fingernails were suppose to be bloodstained, but it didn't really show through as much as I wanted it to.

All in all, I did do more research on Alice than I did on monsters and I'm sure I will be able to remedy that by the time the deadline rolls around.

Thanks again, cuz! You were very generous on your rating!

I like the way the Jabberwock's face is sort of materializing, Cheshire Cat style. I don't know if you meant it that way, but that's what I'm reminded of.

I actually didn't mean to do it that way...I was just trying to get a glowing eye effect...but then when I was finished and stepped back, I was like...hey, that reminds me of the Cheshire Cat! I'm glad you like it!

No problem. And good point... but I kind of don't mind. I'M HORRIBLE, right? XD

Hope you do more of her -- what a hottie!
