Description
Since this things had been doing the rounds, I decided to try something myself... a few empty spaces to doodle in and while away I was standing around doing nothing...I decided to experiment with the concept of my Kraken, Krakatoa, who seems capable of expressing emotion with only eyes, body language and the occassional vocalisation - since he has no proper mouth (just a beak hidden under his tentacles) and can't communicate by speech, being an aquatic creature.
Seems it worked out pretty well.
To summarise the concept:
Happy: Awww! Looks like Krakatoa is happy to see you.
Sad: Hmmm, perhaps Hydrex has told him off for misbehaving and he's giving him a "puppy-eyes" look!
Pleased: Krakatoa seems to feel he's achieved something here...
Angry: The Kraken ain't so pleased now - someone must have rubbed him up the wrong way!
Confused: This is going to take some working out for him...
Tired: Yeah, Krakatoa's had a long day and now he's trying to doze off...
Shocked/Surprised: Whoa! Something gave him rather a start there, causing him to look round with bulging eyes!
Irritated: If that's a harpoon bouncing off his hard spiky scales, some whaler is trying to pick on the wrong cephalopod...
WTF?!: Errrr... did he just try to do that?!
Triumph: Aha! Now he really has achieved something, and is more than just Pleased about it!
Fear: It must be something really scary to frighten a Kraken...
Bereft: Maybe Krakatoa arrived just seconds too late to save a drowning sailor (not Hydrex - just some random human lost at sea) - he's sensitive like that...
Flirty: Yeah, he's very shy...
Serious: Someone's fooling about, but Krakatoa's not in a mood for nonsense right now.
Silly: On the other hand, if Krakatoa gets silly, he might do something like this!
Hollow/Blank: Consider this his normal expression.
Incredulous: Hmm, I don't think he's going to fall for that...
Confident: Whatever situation this is, our Kraken feels sure he can handle it.
Fierce: More than just angry, Krakatoa feels threatened and is ready to show he's ready for trouble.
Despondant/Pouty: Hmm, something didn't go his way, so he's sulking right now.
Drunk: An alcohol spillage at sea perhaps? He's going to have a right head on him in the morning...
Rage: Oh dear! This is not a mood you want to get Krakatoa in! Be glad that you're not the foe that this rage is directed against! Notice, even his tooth-lined beak is visible for once!
Sarcastic: More than Incredulous, Krakatoa knows he's being lied to here and acts like he's playing along. Next, he'll probably stare at you till you tell him the truth!
Disgusted: Something revolting happened, and Krakatoa doesn't want to be near it...
Ill/Nauseous: Krakatoa isn't feeling so good. Maybe he needs some sort of medicine for Krakens. At least it's not serious, though - he'll recover!

Certainly was part of the challenge - who Krakatoa can convey emotion with eyes alone... I always think the eyes are important for that reason!
He looks pretty good in his appearance in my upcoming "Hydrex Adventure" Flash...

Heh, yeah - certainly seems I succeeded in making him expressive and getting something big and scary to seem cute (even though, on this scale, even Marquila is dwarfed in size)
I reckon I was also thinking in terms of how a Kraken could be a force for good in the right hands, in contrast to Davy Jones who qualified as the wrong hands!

I dunno what expression to pick from, they're all good. It's as if Krakatoa may be fierce on the outside but has a gentle heart on the inside.
Hmm.. I was even pondering about the fearful expression LONG before I saw this; my only conclusion is the only scary threat to a Kraken is
A) A Sperm Whale
B) A bigger Kraken
But still, Im sure Krakatoa wouldnt harm a fly..unless Hydrex or Pearl gives the command...now lets see what was it again?

Heh, yeah... Krakatoa's pretty tame really - most of the time!
Sperm whale, though... isn't that the big blue variety...? Not too well up on sea-life...
Oh well, Krakatoa eats fish, of course, and he does abide by the Three Guiding Principles:
1. Avoid harm to other living creatures (acceptable prey such as fish don't count, of course). Rather, try to save lives if possible.
2. Remain obedient to his masters (Hydrex, Pearl, etc) and never bring harm to them.
3. Use self-defence when necessary, but avoid taking life except in extenuating circumstances.

Think of Moby Dick.. thats a sperm whale. They're known to dive GREAT depths to feed on some of the larger squid, they also have alot of scars all over thier bodies for clashes with them.
