A lot of the parental focus of this comic strip is the interactions between Mom and Max, as Max is the one who usually requires more comfort and care. Sam is much more self-sufficient and seems to be the child who is more likely to "act out" (staying up later, not doing homework, disobeying orders, etc.).
Sometimes you forget that Sam is the biological child of Mom; the one she gave birth to, the one she cared for during the first few years of life. In this way, it's nice to see when they can indulge in their own relationship.
Which begs the question... is Sam ever jealous of Max? Even if its only a tiny, secret part deep inside herself? That he seems to be the primary recipient of care (at least from our perspective?)
