They can laugh about it now but heat stroke (as it's usually called in English) is no laughing matter. It's caused by dehydration and it's easy to miss and not notice its onset, especially if you're young.
The first symptom most people will notice is a headache. The second and third occur around the same time, and they are running a high temperature along with no longer feeling thirsty. Yes, that's a symptom of severe dehydration. The body's warning systems go wrong through lack of water so that even though you're dying of thirst, you don't feel like drinking anything.
The next symptom is vomiting, which of course makes the dehydration much worse.
If someone gets to that point, a lot of water at once could make them vomit even more, so small mouthfuls of water swallowed often are usually better than a lot at once.
You can make your own oral re-hydration drink to take with you on outings, just in case of problems.
Mix 10 teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt with every 1 litre (around a quart) of water. If you use a cordial mix instead of plain water, then just add about a quarter teaspoon of salt per litre since the cordial already has lots of sugar and some salt.
In an emergency, any water-based soft drink will do, since it already contains a lot of sugar for energy and some salt to help retain the fluid.
Finally, if the patient can't keep anything down, call for an ambulance right away, especially if it's a child.
