A childhood yearning,Crying out for attention.
A silhouetted high school dream,
Lost in a nightmare's scream.
Suddenly the counter isn't eye level.
Suddenly your stuffed animals shrunk.
Suddenly your ridiculous fears are gone.
Hardened by the world,
Singing songs about things
That have no meaning anymore.
An old soul, they call you.
Looking through an angel's eyes.
But you're a child at heart,
You don't want to face the future.
Holding on to the things that
Made you innocent before.
There's no turning back.
Haunted by a fever dream,
Lingering on thoughts on
What surrounds you.
Where did those years go?
You're getting older by the second.
Suddenly reality is forced on you.
Play-doh, crayons, LEGOs,
Candy, snow forts, stuffed animals
Will become
Coffe cans, ties, briefcases,
Microwave lunch, stocks, and trades.
Cruel fate,
You bring me to my breaking point.

A dear friend recently told me this:
"It's not like young is on one side of the river and old is on the other and one day you cross the bridge to the old and then that's it. It's not even like a gradual hike up a mountain from young to old. It's more like world of grown up where there exist pockets of youth, like splashes of sunlight on a winter afternoon, that one finds unexpectedly and relishes until the sun drops lower behind the buildings".
She is very wise. And growing up is very scary. But instead of lamenting our lost youth, maybe we should take it all in stride and enjoy the rest as much as we can. Because, after all, it won't be gone forever.
