Description
Hey everyone, I've recently been playing a lot of Pokemon games for a while, and over time as I've come to know more and more about the Pokemon world as I have the MLP world is that, there are some striking similarities I noticed. Of course if you looked hard enough you'll find similarities between almost anything, but in this particular case, I couldn't help but notice all the similarities between MLP and Pokemon's main villains. I narrowed it down to the number of Team Rainbow Rocket members (6 excluding Faba) because these 6 villains are the most iconic villains in all of Pokemon, as well as actually being an actual legitimate dark alliance. This picture is a sort of spiritual successor to my other deviation detailing the foundations of all the MLP VILLAINS: www.deviantart.com/deathfirebr…So without further ado here are the similarities I've found between Team Rainbow Rocket and MLP's biggest villains:
Giovanni & The Storm King (Conquerors Of Worlds):
Giovanni and The Storm King, are, to put it simply Pokemon and MLP's ultimate conquerors, because their goals are simple: OWN and ACQUIRE EVERYTHING! Not only are their goals similar, but their joyful conniving enthusiasm even sort of match. Sure the Storm King is a lot more comedic than Giovanni due the nature of MLP universe' law of comedy, but regardless, when they win, they always have a sinister smile or laugh ready at the go. Another aspect about them that makes similar is the fact that they own ENORMOUS conglomerate companies/business and employess. Giovanni is basically a world-dominating mafia boss and the Storm King is called a King for a reason. These 2 represent the epitome of ambition and greed. All is theirs and nothing is enough, one wanted the ultimate pokemon (Mewtwo) and the other wanted the ultimate weapon (staff of Sacansas). What's also an interesting similarity between them is they were both featured in movies of their respective franchises. Giovanni appeared in the 1st Pokemon movie (Mewtwo Strikes Back) and The Storm King appeared in THE My Little Pony: THE MOVIE. Their status is so great that they were even worth being depicted in THE BIG SCREEN. No one can doubt the presence that just emanates from these 2 notorious villains, so much so that it seems to have attracted them a LOT of followers. Which leads me to the last thing I noticed about them: their dedicated apprentices. Yes I'm talking about Giovanni's son, Silver and The Storm King's lieutenant Tempest Shadow. Both of them 2 misguided souls, hardened and shaped by the ways of their evil masters, and were very loyal to their cause until others eventually showed them the light. It takes someone of such greatness to actually be able to convince others that they're worth following, and these 2 are perfect examples of that.
Maxie & Grogar (Architects Of Tyranny):
Now at first you may not immediately notice a similarity between Archie and Grogar (played by Discord) since their goals do seem different on the surface. But the true goal underneath the facade of their schemes is simple: Maintaining order through domination. What I mean by that is that through Maxie expanding all of land mass of the earth and Grogar overrunning the citizens of Equestria in place of his monsters is that they are both able to mitigate the dangers posed by whom they consider their respective 'enemies'. Maxie believes that the existence of the population of pokemon or specifically 'sea pokemon' will eventually lead to the destruction of humanity/land dwelling beings and believes coexistence with them was a mistake. Meanwhile Grogar believes (according to Discord's portrayal) that the followers of friendship have now ruined his chances of establishing his own control over the Equestria he originally founded. Maxie sees pokemon as a threat to humanity, Grogar sees friendship as a threat to his reign. So what they do? They devise plans and assemble teams of committed and dangerous characters, all while maintaining a cruel, cold and calculating demeanor. They also try to acquires things which they believed would be the ultimate tool for achieving their respective goals. Maxie wanted Groudon, and Grogar wanted his bewitching bell, both powerful entities that can grant immense power to those who wielded them. And both of those entities also ended up being turned against the person who desired them the most. Groudon had no interest in Maxie or Team Magma's goals and threatened to destroy them, meanwhile Grogar's bewitching bell was used against him by the mutiny of his own crew. Even though these 2 had brilliant minds, what's ultimate sad about them that they also shared is that they couldn't foresee their own demise. And from there, their paths start to differ as, Maxie eventually saw the light and repented, while Grogar was exposed to be someone else's scam. While their endings differ, their cunning brilliance and the audicity they portrayed to all those around them will never be forgotten.
Archie & Discord (Terrorists Of Chaos):
So now we have the flipside of Maxie and Grogar, Archie and Discord. And boy these 2 pairs couldn't be anymore opposite from each other. While Maxie was cold, quiet and calculating, Archie is loud, passionate and single-minded. While Grogar wanted absolute order and control over everything, Discord just wants to create chaos to have fun! Maxie and Archie have been iconic opposing villains ever since their debut in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, the first games to have 2 game-exclusive villain teams. Meanwhile Discord LITERALLY used Grogar identity to disguise himself as a villain that no one would ever suspect to be him, not even the audience for that matter. And it isn't just their personalities that are different from the previous 2, but their goals also couldn't be even more different. What's similar between Archie and Discord is that their goals ultimately involved the destruction of the present order. Archie wants to flood the entire world in water and restart the earth to the beginning, as a place for and only for pokemon, particularly sea pokemon. Meanwhile Discord wants to submerge the world into a state of neverending chaos, where destruction and nonsense are only allowed to exist. Archie's misguided love of pokemon and hatred of humanity has twisted his mind so much that it has blinded him to the fact that he's essentially committing genocide to his own kind, meanwhile Discord's natural affinity for creating and experiencing chaos as well as his nihilistic sense of fun has blinded him to the dangers friendship poses to his reign, as well as losing out on the fact that friendship could have been given to him, had he been willing to restrain himself. What also so similar between these two is their enthuastic thrill and joy for causing mayhem and the levels of destruction they were willing to cause for their own goals. And ultimately the goals they set out to do both express the same idea, to cause chaos to the world for the things they love; Archie's misguided love of pokemon, and Discord's insatiable love for chaos itself. No other characters in their own franchises were as enjoyably crazy and dangerous as these 2 were when they were in their prime, eventually though, both of them had been shown the light by their respective main characters, and have now channeled their passion and energy towards a (mostly) better goal. Still, from the moment they were presented to their audiences, they knew madness and destruction had finally set their sights for the world and the characters they've come to love.
Cyrus & Nightmare Moon (Dictators Of Dehumanization):
Cyrus and Nightmare Moon are the most tragic villains of this list. As the reason for both of them having turned to villainy involves their childhood experience with neglect and despair. To give some context, Cyrus was a young and brilliant kid, he liked building and spending time with machines but wasn't very sociable at his young age. He didn't talk to any of the kids in his school, and his parents were never satisfied or paid much attention to the brilliant work he'd done on his own, and they had both completely failed to give him the love and attention that he needed, leaving him feeling lonely and resentful of his life, and eventually emotions altogether, which ultimately led him to form a cult-like team and set out to change the fabric of reality, as a god. Meanwhile Nightmare Moon, originally Princess Luna (Princess Of The Moon) was the 2nd ruler of her kingdom and the younger sister to the more popular ruler of her kingdom Princess Celestia (Princess Of The Sun). Throughout the years of their reign, Princess Celestia eventually started to gather more popularity and praise for her work of raising the sun, while Princess Luna received less so for raising the moon. And the constant lack of attention she received in comparison to that of her older sister's eventually led Princess Luna to lash out at her sister and then demanding her that she be treated differently or else she would threaten to tyrannize her kingdom. Which she eventually did, and she did so by giving in to the dark energy buried deep inside her and letting it take control. She changed her shape, size, colors and even her voice and became the one known as Nightmare Moon. Both Cyrus and Nightmare Moon's goals are simple, replace the reigning authority of their worlds and take over as their new dictators. Cyrus wants to take control of Palkia and Dialga, the rulers of time and space, and use them as the god of pokemon, Arceus, used them to create the universe, however this time, he wants to create a universe where he has eradicated the existence of emotions in every living being and wants everyone to live as unfeeling, soulless but 'reliable' machines, devoid of freedom, emotions and personality. Everyone is a slave to logic and power, and he wishes to be that power, to be like a god, to be the new Arceus. Meanwhile Nightmare Moon simply wants to dethrone Celestia and reign over as the sole monarch, all the while subjugating the citizens of Equestria to her will, at the cost of their desires, friendships, individuality and freedom. She wants 'the night to last forever' so to speak so that all will know that their kingdom is protected under the power of her moonlight sky and reign. The sun can never rise, so it can never take over and steal the love and attention she desired when she raised the moon. All will love her and no one else, not even themselves. Both Cyrus and Nightmare Moon's goals are all an enormous compensation for the neglect and loneliness they felt during their childhood. Since Cyrus believed having emotions causes suffering (his loneliness), he then simply wished to erase having emotions altogether. If Princess Luna was never gonna be willingly treated with attention and praises by her subjects, then Nightmare Moon will simply force her subjects to treat her with attention and praise. What so similar between these 2 is the fact that their sadness was what ultimately turned them to the dark side, and that those who should've cared for them, could've saved them from their own destruction, and eventually learned to regret themselves. That and their similar pre-occupation with becoming god-like entities, and their similar methods of enacting some form of dehumanization on the people around them. Cyrus removes human emotion, and Nightmare Moon removes free will and hope. Very similarly tragic villains.
Ghetsis & King Sombra (Despots Of Corruption):
Out of all the villains in this list, these 2 are the most terrifying, why? Cause both Ghetsis and King Sombra are the representations of pure evil in their respective series. Heck King Sombra even says it himself before he is sent back to his dimension that HE IS THE DARKNESS. The origins of these 2 are unknown as explaining them would be to explain the origin of evil itself. Simply put both Ghetsis and King Sombra want to rule their respective worlds as the one true king, and not only that but the way they go about it is terrifying. Ghetsis manipulated people into doubting the love and trust they have between their pokemon and convinced so many to let go of their pokemon because he made them believe that their relationship inevitably causes pokemon suffering, he manages to convince crowds and even his own adopted son, N, that people and pokemon can never be together because humanity is inherently cruel and evil and cause suffering when in fact it is only people like him who do such things. Ghetsis is so terrifying because he tries to take over the world by making everyone doubt their morality and humanity. And Ghetsis only wanted to trick people into doubting themselves and letting go their pokemon because all he wanted was to be the only person with all the pokemon and to reign over as a king. Meanwhile, King Sombra here literally has the full power darkness in his command. He can turn into a dark smoky cloud, devour other ponies, turn them to zombies and literally invade their minds to fill it with despair and or turn them evil, he is literally darkness incarnate in the MLP world. And again what so scary about Sombra is the same with what makes Ghetsis scary. He tries to take over the world not by attacking them, but by converting them, changing them, making them give in to their despair or evil! He literally makes others evil. Not only can he appear in ponies' nightmares and illusions, but he can absolutely take over other ponies minds and make them his own. What's scary similar between Ghetsis and King Sombra is their ability and willingness to corrupt the souls of others and their desire to make slaves. Heck, Ghetsis' Hydreigon is basically an abused warrior pokemon that he trains by using mistreatment on it to make it stronger. Last but not least, much like how both of them desire to make others give in to the darkness lurking inside them, Ghetsis and King Sombra also have a desire to raise successors to their thrones, Ghetsis wanted N to be the new King of Unova at first but then turned his attention to Giovanni when N's mind had been changed by the protagonist, while Sombra seemed like he wanted to raise the child of the parents that tried to destroy him, Princess Flurryheart. Ghetsis and Sombra are some of the most darkest characters in all of fiction, as you never know exactly what fueled these desires in the first place or even what exactly are they really. One things' for certain though, Ghetsis and King Sombra really are the masters of corrupting the souls of others.
Lysandre & Tirek (Warriors Of Destruction):
If there's one thing that characterizes Lysandre and Tirek in one word, it would be, hatred. As Lysandre and Tirek seek only 1 thing, ultimate destruction. Lysandre seeks to destroy the weak, imperfect and selfish people of the world, those who make life harder for others, and those who don't have the strength to help anyone, even themselves. This hatred for humanity manifested when the poor people whom Lysandre wanted to help, suddenly became greedy and tried to ask too much from him. At that point he felt the world had betrayed him, and he also felt that a world this broken, doesn't deserve to exist, and that it should be wiped away and humanity should again start over. He wishes to exact vengeance and judgement on the world he feels will eventually destroy itself over time. Lysandre wants to punish and destroy humanity, like an angry god, and start a new race, a race full of perfect people, where weakness will not be tolerated and power and strength will be worshipped above all. Meanwhile Tirek developed his hatred for the world when his father, King Vorak, sentenced his teacher to a life working in mines when Sendak the Elder taught him, as young boy, to try and steal a pony's essence to feed himself. Tirek resented his father for punishing him for engaging in his teacher's dangerous activities (since it allowed him to become stronger), and ever since then he had plotted to take over his father. The next thing that fueled Tirek's rage and hatred for the world was the perceived betrayal he experienced of his brother Scorpan, befriending the creatures known as 'ponies'. He thought of ponies as lesser life forms since they engaged in the weakness of 'friendship', and when he finds out that his own brother has allied himself with these so-called 'lowlifes', he was driven to the point of madness. He then spends the rest of his life, destroying other peoples lives, stealing their energy, all in an effort to prove that he is strong and invincible while those who believe in friendship are weak and deserve to die. What's so similar between Lysandre and Tirek is that their desire for cataclysmic destruction were both fueled by the resentment and hatred they had developed towards the people they once loved and wanted to be with. Unable to accept the weakness of others and the pain they cause them, both Lysandre and Tirek sought out to destroy their worlds so that they would once again be perfect. Lysandre wanted to used AZ's ultimate weapon to create global genocide, whilst Tirek steals and uses the power of the 4 princesses as well all the power of every living thing in all of Equestria to destroy them and their homeworld. What's also similar between Lysandre and Tirek is that they believe, their destruction of lives is an act of liberation. Lysandre believes, killing all the weak and imperfect will free the world to become perfect and pure again, free from misery and pain, whilst Tirek believes that by relying only on himself and destroying everything in his way, he will free himself from the 'slavery' of 'friendship'. Both villains similarly believe that their vengeful genocide is justice, and both have developed a distorted view of "freedom".
