Description My fourth project for my computer art class. This one asked for a colorful picture that was based on a quote... I forget what quote it was... honestly. You can see how well I followed that instruction I just love color. I had the idea in mind, drew it, and then found a quote I thought sounded similar to the message I felt from the picture.

So this is Shautek, a tribal girl that DA hasn't seen since this picture everyone wanted me to color (I diiiiiid color it... but I never finished it. Fail on me I know ) To sum up the story with her, she is from the same story my characters Kran and Andrew (Sorry only ref I have) are from. Unlike them, she's from a planet similar to the continent of Africa, the rain forest specifically.

Recently, her world was visited by some metal wearers that are harvesting the mountains of her land. Her people have been taken as slaves to work the mines. She is one of the last to be captured, due to her speed. Her species are runners, and Shautek is one of the fastest. Between racing from her newly equipped predators, she feels destined to free her people, save her home, and kick out the metal wearers once and for all! Lot of pressure to put on someone... good luck Shautek!

This is very nice. I like the lighting effects, and the character's design.

Is this really vector, or just vector-y style?

Thank yee. I've always felt that atmosphere was something that can make a picture. Shautek is one of my favorite character designs I've made thus far.

It was done in Adobe Illustrator, which is a vector program, so yes all vector.

It reminds me a bit of Samurai Jack, with the solid colours and no black outlines.

Lineless art is pretty common as are solid colors, but I hear ya. Samurai Jack was awesome.

Guh, I just love your use of color and lighting. You always manage to make such simple environments look so lovely, just with those two elements. I've also always been a fan of your character design, both visually and story-wise. =v= They aren't all the same copy-pasta, over-used stereotypes.

Like I said to *4kt , Shautek's design has been a crazy roller coaster ride. Her hair and fur colors have changed every time I've drawn her. This is the first time I've actually came to a scheme I'm comfortable with. Clothing wise, there are slight edits, but she's been wearing generally the same thing for a long time since her first appearance on DA (First time she only wore a bra... )

Story wise I think the key is to just go with an idea. Don't worry about cliches, stereotypes, or what's recently out. Think about those when your close to publishing, until then just have fun with it and most of your problems would have worked out by then.

Yeah, I've been keeping track of her as you post stuff of her, and her purple hairbits are definitely new. ;; I like it though! And even if she's gone through a lot of revamps, you seems to know where you're taking her. You seem to also go with the idea that, for a character design, you don't beed a crapload of detail, ala jrpg fantasy games --- all you really need are some basic distinguishing features. Those tend to be a lot nicer to look that than people with hair spikes up to the sun and with long coats covered in billions of buckles. ;;

That's always the hardest part for me. I've found that I'm...well, a perfectionist. Despite what I say about "screw it people can just accept it", I always want to make everything absolutely the best I can make it before showing it to others, and it's even worse when it's something of my own creation. Im going to have to grow some balls eventually, I know...but for now I just want to build up my confidence. ;v;

I've always been under the impression if a character can't be distinguished under Silhouette and shaved, then the design is flawed. The mixture is both anatomy and features are needed to make someone stand out. A lot of RPGs don't change the body so they depend more on the features such as the clothes. Shautek's people have yet to be drawn, so it's hard to put her to the test, but it's a general rule I believe in.

Shautek's story still needs a lot of work, that's why I haven't been drawing her or anything related. Glad to know she has a fan though!

Common paranoia, no one wants to look any less than their best. In my new project I'm not thinking "This will be big on the internet" I'm thinking "This will be a big flop on the internet." People want to be accepted, holding back emotions and ideas is a fear for not having that. I'm constantly worrying that my story isn't going meet my standards, but that's why I'm starting with it along with Jake and Beta. Not for perfectionist reasons, but since they're from not-so-serious storylines I can do more with them while still keeping a forgiving barrier that I could never have for more serious works like Shautek. It becomes less stressful.

Start small. Confidence will grow from there. If not, like you said, just make your story and hope for the best! Someone will admire your work, someone always does.

It's definitely a good rule --- I think my teachers mentioned something similar at SCAD when i went a few summers ago.

Ahhh. I can definitely understand that. That's the problem with a creative career sometimes --- there's too much creativity and not enough time to work on it all. =v=;

It's all so true. I've just been letting my paranoia get the best of me. I'll start on my stories sometime in the next couple of years....I just want to start getting into my sequential classes and learn a bit about storytelling before I start.

Heh, that is true. Your comments are always such an emotional boost. ;;

Deathinator In reply to PartyBat [2010-12-03 20:34:49 +0000 UTC]

I think that's true in any situation. We never have the time we need for the things we want to do during

I hear you to a point! That's why I'm doing JB Quickies, to learn what my art style should be like. It's not an extreme discovery plan, just little things like "Should the backgrounds be lineless."

I would just start now, if I were you. A couple years is a loooong time to wait. If you learn anything from those storytelling classes it can be implemented in your next project! There is always a next.

Yay. I like making peoples happies. I look forward to your story, whether that be tomorrow or in two years!

;A; It makes me wish there was more ime in the day to do things without sacrificing sleep haha.

Ah, that's a good idea. I've been meaning to do stuff like that as well...but things have been getting in the way of art time. ;; It's definitely paying off though --- your stuff is getting exponentially better with each picture~

True true...I guess it's just starting. I've actually been thinking of starting a doujin anthology for my stupidgames, so I might start off with something like that. ;v; I would feel as bad about butchering something, since it wouldn't be something so important to me haha.

Hahaha, I can tell. xD Same with you~

Deathinator In reply to PartyBat [2010-12-04 03:49:57 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. If there was a formula so that you didn't need sleep (and had no side effects) I'd bet it would be the number one sold.

Mostly it's just for consistency reasons. I want all my episodes to look the same. Although improvement I'll try not to hinder: such as smoother animation movement. Thankies muchly though, I try!

Starting is the hardest part, that's why you need to push for it! I have heard people using fan fictions for the same reason, just to build confidence. Go for it, see where it takes you!

Pretty much. oAo I'd miss dreaming though, since that gives me so many ideas....and then I have no time to build on them all gdi the cycle continues. I've figured it all out.

Ahh, smart smart! Hahaha, it's easy to see that you really do. You can really tell how much effort and thought you put into each piece~

Exactly! I might actually even team up with some fanfic writers in the fandom, just to get used to pacing before coming up with my own scenarios. Just need to get out there and start asking around~

I write down my dreams sometimes, but most of the time I don't remember them by time I wake up XD

I've never tried that myself, but it sounds like it'd help! I was never that good in making fanfics, rather I never obsessed over something enough to make one But I could well imagine they'd be great practice.

PartyBat In reply to Deathinator [2010-12-06 22:45:02 +0000 UTC]

I tend to doodle the people from my dreams more than anything, haha. But I have the same problem --- it seems like, the second I sit up, I can't remember a thing though I was just mulling the dream over in my head seconds before.

Same same. I've been into stuff before, but not quite like this, so it may be a good opportunity to explore characters and plots and blablabla. I can also get used to drawing things in a panelled format~ For once I'm glad I'm a creepy fangirl if it'll end up helping me get better at story telling. ;;

Deathinator In reply to ScottyArtz [2010-11-23 19:01:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, it's taken a while to get it right. In fact, every time I've drawn her she's had different color hair up until the last few months. Oh, and her actual fur changed throughout as well. She used to have these colors, but in a different order (the white fur used to be the stripes, for instance)
