Early in the morning I received what perhaps could be one of the most heartbreaking news I've ever received in my life. Kentaro Miura, my highest and most beloved icon in japanese manga, passed away in May 6th of this year.

I've followed his work since back in my highschool days, and I was always fascinated by his ability to make very complex and diverse characters in his works. This incredibly talented man was capable of delivering the most tragic and gruesome of stories on paper, and yet there was always that very strong human element which rather than depress you, it kept you to keep on reading. The evolution of his artwork and the level of detail and fantastic realism is something I always found myself impressed with no matter how many times I read the manga over and over again. With an array of compelling characters and memorable characters many of which you could identify with on different stages of your life, Berserk was an undisputable masterpiece, in my humble opinion.

I've never been shy to demonstrate my love for Miura's work, as it inspired me in many ways that go beyond just writing. In fact, BloodBound, while not based on Berserk, drew many MANY elements from Berserk. Within my knit circle of pen friends with which I share my writings, quoting them with their own words, is that I always stood out for making grim and gritty characters that while edgy, that wasn't the only trait to their personality as they were complex and multidimensional. At one time I even showed the background of my protagonist, Dante [spiky-haired guy dressed fully in black] and they told me "dude....you'd make Guts from Berserk feel proud of this". Comparing my work to Berserk is probably the highest form of praise I've ever received. And even then I'd never consider myself on the same level as Miura in like EVER. He's to me what Michael Jackson was to Pop Music.
