Description Still practising.
Still my wonderful encyclopedia of animals.
Still pencils.

I tried to copy a beautiful shot of a flamingo in the sun.
The photo was really gorgeous, and inspiring.
The result, ..well, whatever.
And then the scanner- UUUAAAHRRGHHHGHHGHHHHH ..so I had to take a photo-of-the-drawing-of-the-photo.

PS: ..Sorry for posting things even more shoddy than usual!
I'm trying to learn!

you are way to hard on yourself! this is a beautiful drawing regardless of who took the photo.. you have captured great depth and have used a beautiful pallete of colours that most people wouldnt have thought to use.. you are very talented!

(Sorry fot the late reply! )
Thank you for such very cute words!
I must admit that, as days pass, I'm starting to like it more, maybe because I'm gradually forgetting the original photo to which I was comparing it. But as for the colours I used, they were the result of the ones actually appearing in the shot (for example, that blue/violet tone on some shadows does exist in the original), limited by the palette at my disposal (36 mixed color pencils, mostly of cheap quality), so it's more a case than my actual merit.
Anyway thank you for your nice comment, I take it as a good wish!
I'd really love to improve and learn to use colors in an original and meaningful way!

you welcome.. and i had no doubt that those colours were in the photo.. but you sell yourself short.. a lot of artists dont even see those colours.. they would think ok a flamingo is pink and just use vaying degrees of pink regardless of whats in front of them..
One thing i do is when i get the basics of an animal down like fur direction and correct placement of everything.. i get rid of the photo.. that way you dont get too bogged down in getting an exact likeness and being too hard on ourself when you don't.. i mean think about it how many people are going to see the reference next to your drawing

The fact that you are using a limited pallette and cheap pencils at that shows a lot for your promise as an artist.. when you can get hold of some prismacolour pencils dick blick sells them cheaper than other places.. these are wonderful pencils and you will notice a big difference!

Thanks for the kindness and the really good tips! That's useful, getting rid of the model once you've got the basic lineart - it's a thing I've never tried before, even if I've already drawn animals by myself, using many different photos just as a reference for fur, paws shape, etc.
Even if I'm starting to re-use again pencils now after AGES, I've already heard about these Prismacolour! I've seen many beautiful pieces drawn with them here on DA. I'd like to try them one day ..maybe I could find them in some good art shop here.
Thanks for the advice!!

your very welcome good luck with your hunt for the prismas you will love them!
i find Cameras tend to flatten out subjects also.. so once you get rid of the reference you are more at liberty to just work on a subject till it looks right.. the photo can quite often steer you in the wrong direction.. for example make shadows look like dark holes with no detail

That's also true! I haven't been realizing that, till someone (a painter dear friend of mine) made me notice! It seems like you can't avoid to bring the "lack of depth" from the 2D-photo to your drawing.

heh...it is
But it's also funny, and a nice way to practice (..at least, I hope!). so I don't feel like I worked hard for a real artwork...it's like "homework"

It's beautiful!
I can really see you spend a lot of time on it!

I love the light coming from above, and how you coloured it.

Aww, it's not shoddy!

Finally I managed to put a better photo - now it's a little clearer, I hope. I used a little of blue and violet on shades, and I hate that the scanner make them disappear
Hehe thank you, your support is always precious!
