Chuck grinned to himself as the shell of the drall-beast was paraded past him. His keen nose detected the overripe smell of human witch blood on it, underneath the musk of rotting meat and graphite. He wondered which one of the Guardians took it down.

Sure they were a pretentious lot, spouting off about power and faith and old gods. The empty eyes behind the words told the real story though and he made sure to avoid them when they did their patrols through the Lower Levels.

As he watched the crowd he shifted uneasily on his legs. Something was missing here, but he couldn't single it out. The night's watch was fairly happy, having something to do in the less dangerous hours of the day.

Chuck itched at his ankle, jiggling his coin purse slightly and it hit him. No bells. To mark the fall of each genetically engineered terror, bells would ring out a code detailing what had happened before it was posted on the Academy walls.

But no bells. Chuck folded his lanky frame down a bit more in the shadow cast by the gargoyle he perched next to. He wondered briefly if someone else had brought it down. His initial reaction would have been to laugh. No one but the Guardians had brought down a drall-beast in half a century.

A person flanked by two night guards was making their way down the main road carefully. The smell of witchblood hit his nose hard as they passed under him and Chuck had to clamp his hand over his snout to keep from sneezing.

The five foot changeling shifted again to a crouched position, ready to start moving again. The city would soon know what wandering witch had brought down the beast- he had other things to do. Anyone else would submit to someone else's tomorrow. And he had a king to kill.
