Probably a mix of both.
He's not a stupid mecha he's aware he's got neurological damage and a slew of issues from that so when he has the perceptual crashes that make him attack things he's most likely aware of the moments and aware he has no control over himself.
No doubt that's terrifying as fuck.
Now he's done yet another stupid thing because he had a breakdown and no doubt hates himself for it.

Yeah, he's a pretty sad character and also a damn shame when you look to the fandom and all he gets portrayed as is "violent/abusive angry pisslord".
I mean honestly you watch Webworld and it's outright stated he only freaks out 'cos of plasma damage to his processor/brain.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the self-image/self-belief issues he's implied to have in that tumblr post is related to his neurological damage making him somewhat aware of his breakdowns.

I think the reason I like him so much is because of the tfa one and then I decided to watch G1 after that.
And you know it might also be the fact I'm a history nerd and his color scheme reminds me of the american WWII officer uniform, and he turns into a jet AND a tank!

Oh yeah, I'm two episodes away from finishing TFA and he's an utter character!
He doesn't get as much limelight in G1 (That's what you get for having more characters than episodes) but he did at least get his share of interesting moments.
Plus he looks like he's wearing a belt and goggles in TFA
