Weapons:

'Punch of Vorkus'- A Modified Type-1 Gravity Hammer that can create electromagnetic fields which can be used to manipulate the metal in a foe's weapons or armour, though this is not a very accurate ability and has a distinct area of effect (one only the user is unaffected by), this can be used to move a good portion of enemy troops out of Herrius' way and disorient them long enough for them to be defeated. Truly, this weapon is not to be trifled with. The weapon originates from Vorkus I- a great ancestor to Herrius, who fought and battled in the Second Immolation and was passed down to him following the death of Vorkus II, who led the Alpha Pack that Herrius was a part of and made Herrius his successor.

'Gatekeeper's Roar'- A Modified Pool of Radiance class Type-33 Fuel Rod Gun that fires rods that have larger explosions on ground and walls, but the blasts embed themselves into an enemy and melt into their body, leaving behind a pool of waste gel.

'Guardian's Riddle'- A Type 25 Spiker Modified and customised to meet Herrius' specifications, in particular, the spikes used are incendiary.

Standard Issue Scale of Soirapt Class Type-25 Brute Plasma Rifle

'Burn of Infernus'- A Modified, Customised Type-52 Plasma Launcher, named after Infernus, a great Jiralhanae weapons forger.

Standard Issue Ravager

Branding Irons built into his helmet- Herrius can heat up branding irons built into his helmet, which he can use to headbutt someone and burn them in the process.

Personality: Young and untested, Herrius was a mere captain of an exploration ship, stripped of his former status as a Chieftain when he and his crew were diverted off-course to pursue a stolen Covenant ship under the leadership of some crook named Pfal Yar. The rest, they say, is history.

Though he does have a penchant for stuffy speeches, Herrius is much more down-to-Doisac than his fellow Jiralhanae. He is committed to ancient codes of honour and moral judgement, mostly forgotten by his species, but he does view them with some irreverence, and is not above finding loopholes or administering unorthodox solutions if necessary. ("Sometimes, crazy works", he says.) He is eternally loyal to his friends and respectful to his enemies, and brave and selfless in battle. In fact, he is so committed to helping others that he is willing to deny help when he clearly needs it, and surprisingly hasn't gotten angry with the lack of support from the Sangheilian Armed Forces in his rebellion on Doisac.

Remarkably open-minded for his species, Herrius has no hatred towards the Sanghelli and actually enjoys the company of his reptilian warrior brethren, though unfortunately the same cannot be said for all of the Jiralhanae under his command, many of whom only take orders from him because he is their best hope at toppling over the ruthless Chieftain of the Jiralhanae- Barcus, who in their eyes, sold their race out to The Prophet of Reliance who in reality cares not for them in the slightest.

Herrius is the leader of his Master Pack and Councillor of the Tar'Vul Skein. He leads the rebellions on Doisac against the Jiralhanae Covenant led by Barcus, a Jiralhanae Supremacist who collaborated with the High Prophet of Reliance to bring about the Great Schism. As of recent, the rebellions of Packs, Skeins and other groups have had limited success, which has allowed Barcus' plans of rapid and aggressive military expansion to flourish. However, supplies and aid from the UNSC and Allied Sangheili Houses are helping the rebellions slowly gain some sort of vantage.

Herrius is one of few Jiralhanae to have a true and close set of Sangheili friends, his first and foremost friend being Supreme Commander Thora 'Marumee, his former superior in the Covenant, even during the time of the rising hate and anger between Sangheili and Jiralhanae, Herrius still held more liberal views towards the Sangheili, as did Thora to the Jiralhanae, explaining their close camaraderie as some of few in their respective groups who actually liked each other. Herrius states often that the Brutes are not inferior to the Elites and nor are the Elites inferior to the Brutes, a view very different to Barcus, who believes, stereotypically, that the Elites are inferior.

In spite of his balanced heart which does not hold the same harshness expected by Jiralhanae standards, Herrius is still a Jiralhanae, and like most Jiralhanae, he desires battle and needs to exert some level of authority, even if it is cruel, in order to be seen by his peers as a good Chieftain. Herrius does admit privately that he does not fully agree with intensity of his species’ traditions and dispositions, but he would be amiss to say that he did not support it to some extent. One thing he absolutely hates and makes vocal of his hate for is the comfort many Jiralhanae take in cannibalising other species. During the Human-Covenant War, he could not understand the appeal of eating dead humans, nor could he take pleasure from it. Many Jiralhanae view Herrius, for all these reasons, as weak and unwilling to embrace what it is to truly be a Jiralhanae, and have wrongly assumed that that means he can’t properly smack them down in a fight.

Herrius believes he is charged with being 'The Gatekeeper' who guards 'The Gate'. It is unknown what exactly this means, because Herrius is very rarely around gates of any sort, but it apparently has something to do with preventing Barcus, a figure who was reviled in the Jiralhanae's lost, ancient mythology, from entering the world and bringing apocalypse. Due to the fact that his mortal enemy is a Jiralhanae who named himself after this analogue to the Antichrist, perhaps Herrius' belief in his role as the Gatekeeper is more metaphorical, and he is supposed to stop the Barcus he knows from ruining his species and destroying Doisac once more.

He shall not let you pass.

(Herrius' backstory was just a little too big to fit on deviantart, so I got him on google docs just like seemingly everyone I tend to write nowadays: docs.google.com/document/d/1b1… )

Quotes:

"Let us face it my friends, Barcus has betrayed us, the Brutes and the Elites. Do you not see? He is Barcus, legendary embodiment of evil in our culture! The true enemy of our species, and he shall pay for condemning our individuality yet again, and spilling the blood of our Sangheili brothers."

"I am Jiralhanae Army Commander Herrius, My purpose is to stop you, so...you shall NOT pass!"

Barcus: "Come on, let's hear it, the usual destiny and honour speech." Herrius: "Speech this!"

Herrius: "I hope to see you again on this battlefield Thora, perhaps by then it will no longer be a battlefield." Thora 'Marumee: "Doisac is a good place Herrius, a beautiful place. Fight for it with every muscle in your body, every thought in your mind, and with every beat in your heart. Farewell." Herrius: "May Bdoni's Wings carry you to safety Thora." Thora 'Marumee: "And may Urs' light guide you to victory my friend."- Herrius and Thora 'Marumee on Thora needing to leave Doisac, and a quick exchange of their respective peoples' traditional ways of saying goodbye and good tidings.

"Sometimes crazy works."

”The Jiralhanae don’t know what to do with themselves. When the Covenant took us in, they united us, gave us enemies to fight other than ourselves. That worked out for a while, until it didn’t. Then we started to fight amongst ourselves again whilst the Prophets slowly turned us into slaves. Our fault for not paying attention. But then the Elites started treating us like dung, we were animals to them. Still are to a lot of them. We proved them right- animals fight with each other over the most trivial, instinct-dominated crap. We did just that. But then Reliance had the idea to simplify his Covenant by putting us in place of the Sangheili. Our long awaited emancipation, everyone said, another damned form of slavery, I said. Now that we’ve lost the Covenant and most have realised how much of a liar Reliance is, we’re back to where we were 600 years ago. Packs need to stop fighting each other, else we’re just gonna find ourselves into the same cycle yet again, or worse, we won’t even live long enough to see one.”
