Description As ye all know by now, my debut Marvel work, Thunderbolts #148 is out this Weds (Stateside)/Thurs (UK/Eire).

I noticed Marvel have done a lot of covers with the looming Daredevil figure incorporated in their Shadowland line. So, since my T-Bolts issues are part of the Shadowland crossover, i thought I'd try my hand at a Thunderbolts one. A kind of a 'what if I got to draw a cover' type thing.

Anyway, here it is.

Nice, I've been a bit fed up of the shadowland covers with DD in that background but you've tweaked it enough to make stand out. As much as I like the cover artist on Thunderbolts I do prefer it when the interior team get 1st crack at it. Gla dto know its on its way out, I should get it in the post monday

Cool; thanks man!

In fairness, that DD figure dominates the composition so it's difficult to come up with something that will work with it, which i think i *just about* managed.

I know, as a constant design element its not a great idea. I like how you mixed the style of it up a bit, makes it much fresher and fitting and less "I had to throw this in".

Thanks man.

A constant design element is fine but that specific one is a bit hindering i guess. Glad you liked how i managed it.

Cheers! If only the folder was filled with my drawings and not nude photography.

And THAT'S why your drive is so hard.

This would be my favorite of the Shadowland covers by far if it was real, Dec!

Very cool! I especially love the line treatment on Daredevil's face!

Thanks Evan! That's the one bit where i strayed from that DD figure by showing a bit more of his face but shading it in line. Glad you like it.

That's brilliant, Dec. I wish you did have the cover because (frankly) I like this better than what I've seen of the covers. The linework on Moonstone is great.

Thanks man! Yeah, i'm not hot on a lot of the covers but i'll admit, it's hard to come up with a good design when that DD silhouette takes up so much of the image.

Linework on Moonsone? Really? There's barely any lines on her!

That's what I mean man! Not that you need to be compared to other artists, but the lines remind me of Paul Azaceta's work a little. The spare lines really punch up her profile in comparison to the rest of the gang.

DeclanShalvey In reply to DocShaner [2010-09-15 17:09:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot man; I'm a big Azaceta fan, so if my stuff reminds you of him, then i'm delighted. That's very much the type of art i like to look at, so i'm glad my work looks like that too.

I think a lot of artists end up with a style that if they were able to step back and look at properly, they wouldn't actually like. It's like someone with a knock-off Jim Lee style saying they like Mignola. If they like him so much, why aren't they incorporating what they like into their own work...?

Anyway, i digress. Thank you very much for the comment; i take it as a great compliment

Ditto, and besides your Crossbones kicks everyone else's ass (well, except Epting's).

Thanks man; he's so much fun to draw. I spent a while at his mask trying to find my way of doing it.

I had a breakthrough when i saw Leinil Yu's version as he placed the eyes in the holes of the mask like sockets, making it look more like a skull. It all came from there then.
