DISCLAIMER #1!: This is not an official DeviantART project and DeviantART will not be involved in making selections or in processing any royalty payments.

I have always loved anthologies.  Growing up in Britain 95 percent of the comics were weekly anthologies so it has been firmly ingrained in my psyche.

I've always felt that anthologies are a good platform for experimentation, trying new ideas and styles, introducing new talent and especially good to read in the bathroom.  I'll never forget the impression Heavy Metal had on me when I first saw it.

They're perfect for those moments when you've read through the 100 comics you've bought that month and realized there wasn't a single complete story in the pile.

I've recently relaunched two previously successful anthologies, A1 and MONSTER MASSACRE.

I have also been enjoying working on Heavy Metal.  Check out my previous journal as I'm sure you will find it of great interest if you like the magazine.

Sooo... DeviantART... We all love it here. For years it has been the art communities greatest secret.  Finally the word seems to be spreading and more and more people seem to be hearing about it.  If you have been to San Diego Comic-con how could you come away not knowing what it is and the effect it has had on the artists in Artists Alley by supporting Clydene Nee and the convention committees efforts there.

I'd like to have a go at helping spread the word myself.  The format that comes most natural now to me would be a nice big thick book.  But how do I go about editing a selection of the biggest, greatest, art community in the world into a mere 200 page book?

DeviantART is a community of artists of every kind.  Not just comics and manga.  Concept and videogame design. Sculpture and 3D modeling. Cartoons and anime.  Writers and fine artists.  Photographers and film makers.  Models and cosplayers. Jewelry and tattoos.

I don't know what shape this will take yet.  I'm hoping I get some kick-ass submissions as well as pieces and sets that I'll be reaching out to the community for.

I'm currently planning on the book being approximately 200 plus pages, hard back, 8 x 11 inches and color, although you can still submit work in black and white. I can add more pages but I think it is important to keep the price point to where people can afford this easily.  It shouldn't cost more than $25 dollars.

This will be a book about the dA community.  About the length and breadth of the talent that oozes down the cables onto computers screens around the globe.  I hope this does well enough to achieve two major things.

1/ I hope this becomes a regular series for you.  An annual that takes a snapshot of the community.
2/ I hope this sells well enough so that those that contribute earn a royalty.

See, I don't want anyone to not get paid for their work seeing print, but at this stage I'm not in any situation to pay rates.  My thinking is this, I'll be editing the book but the royalties will go to the artists whose work graces the pages of it.  I also won't have the time to send out royalty checks for single pages where the amounts could be $10, so there will be some rules.

A/ I'll be looking for contributions of 6 or more pages for the book.  This will limit the amount of Deviants but will give those included more room to show off their work and promote it effectively.
B/ There will be no upfront payment for the inclusion of your work but all deviants will share equally in a royalty that will be 8% of cover price.  Whatever royalty comes in will be divided by the amount of pages in the book to work out how much each person will earn.
C/ I will update the entire community so everyone will know how many copies of the book is sold and what the payments will be.  This will be done through an updated journal.  Royalty statements are usually issued every six months after the book has officially gone on sale.  If we sell 2000 copies in the first 6 months that'll be around $3600.00 dollars in royalties to be divided among the contributors.  Not much but if more books come out and the earlier books are kept in print, that could build up nicely over time.  Royalties will only be paid once the print and shipping costs have been recouped.
D/ Complimentary copies cost money so there will be 3-5 copies per creator upfront for free and then additional copies will be available for purchase at a little over cost. Don't forget, postage and handling costs money too.

Any one who either has experience of book design or wants to be a book designer can also pitch their ideas for the design of the book.  I'm open to help and ideas to get this done.

I'll keep adding to this as I think of anything else.

DISCLAIMER #2!!: This is not an official DeviantART project and DeviantART will not be involved in making selections or in processing any royalty payments.

Please remember that whatever you submit must be yours.  You can't submit artwork or stories that incorporate elements or characters or artwork that are owned by others.  No Batman or Wolverine or Harry Potter stories please or My Little Pony pin-ups.  Also, only submit if you genuinely feel your work is ready to see print. I know it is tough assessing your own material, be brutal with yourself.

DISCLAIMER #3!!! I work for a living and in the comics industry that means you work hard for little money and rarely get a break.  If I like what I see I will tell you but I won't be able to reply to everyone about why I couldn't use your work and/or give a critique.  You will find that very few editors ever have the time to get back about submissions.  Sometimes if you're lucky you'll get a rejection slip in with your returned submission.

In this case either post below or send me a message with a link to the pieces you want to submit.

Also, this isn't a race.  I want to give as many people the chance to see this as possible.  Think hard about what you want to submit or do for this.  I'll update this journal when I have set a firm deadline.

I'm not setting a deadline for submissions at this point as I want as many people to see this as possible.  I'll probably set a deadline around the end of October once people have had a chance to think about this.  By then I'll have all the points finalized and be able to give you all the details. I should also have an approximate on sale date for the book.

NOTE: THERE IS NO DEADLINE SET AT THE MOMENT!

DISCLAIMER #4!!!! This is not an offiicial Deviantart project and deviantart will not be involved in making selections or in processing any royalty payments.

I know that I probably have no chance to actually make it onto the pages of your epic book, but here's 6 3d renders, for just in case I have a chance within the smallest of dots:

Generally, the self is the worst form of critic in the world, for you know of where you could have done better, always comparing it to others' works because there will always be someone better. ^^ That's just the world we live in, I guess.

Anthology is great Idea but as far as I am concerned a quarterly Dev Art magazine is something this company should be taking into consideration. I know I would subscribe and so wouldn't half the people on Dev Art just to see if there artwork made it in.

That would be an awesome idea.

I think if they ever develop a dA app they could do a digital interactive magazine that would rock.

Best,

Sorry for entering the conversation like this, but I've read the ideas here and they really seem quite interesting.

I think a digital magazine could be made offering art from several areas and maybe, at start, free distribution paid through advertisements (just a thought anyway). If it was successful then they could start moving forward with paid (by the user) material like art anthologies and maybe specialized magazines (sci-fi, fantasy, photography, visual art, etc).

I could be a good business plan, but it might be out of the scope of what the moderators have in mind for the site, of course, but it would be a great idea to both promove the artists and expand the scope of the community. Juts my two cents anyway.

There are many ways of moving forward and no one should limit it to any one.  I thought this would be a good place to start and as you've already shown, there are other ideas as well that could and should be done.

The power really is yours.  It is all your material to do as you wish.  Find enough like minded people and you can do your own digital books.

Remember, while I check with the moderators that I could do this, it is your material, your ideas and just requires your own motivation.

Thank you so much for your reply and your words. They really mean a lot.

The most important, though, is to keep people motivated and doing great art. The soul does need nourishment too. I was trying to point new ideas and strategies, and you're absolutelly right, if one has his/her own projects and believes they might work, they that person should go for it.

Again, thank you for your time and attention, and for your dedication to this wonderful community. Keep the magnificent work.

In these days where it is harder to break in at the bigger companies and rates of pay are dropping, you should focus on your own projects for if you succeed the bigger companies will come for you.  At that point you have to decide what you want to do.

Good luck!

I love the anthology Idea [grew up with reruns of the twilight zone, and Tales form the Cyrpt] yet what if there was one big universe that everyone on DA made as a comic, it has to be original characters and is an anthology. but a Mega anthology. would that work, making it also an exclusive digital book as well?

or would that be disastrous idea?

KittyPwa In reply to skysoul25 [2013-09-26 16:55:37 +0000 UTC]

I'd definatly be game for a mega universe. Something where everyone could contribute, creating characters and character plots. Its quite easy to find people creating simple characters all over the place, other people using these, some creating landscapes and some doing everything. Now of course, some people will have to coordinate all this and it would be hell on earth, but at the same time, if it were possible, you'd get a fast-moving world with tons of storylines all criss-crossing, going all over the placeand coming back. Because it isnt one but several people creating all this, some ideas will be incompatible, some characters and landscapes just won't fit, but at the same time, what will will create what I expect to be one of the most dynamic universes we've seen. I've grown up with stories of those kind of universes where there are multiple characters going around in them, like the heros of Marvel or DC comics, but in its own way, it was limited. Here, we will have everything morphing continuously. It wouldn't be as simple as having G-guys B-guys where they hit each other, but rather a world of tones of grey. Obviously, there must be a major plot, something that puts everything in motion, which explains why everything is moving so fast. Some similar goal or battle. Whatver, it doesn't really matter. Here we'd have a universe that would expand quickly, constantly. We just have to look around, I'd bet there are tons of story writters, comic artists, any kind of artists that are in the shadows, showing their art with little recognition because they don't know how to show it. But here, everyone has a chance, everything is possible, and there would be a whole world to create.

Welp, thats what I think of it anyways...

I think that's a fantastic idea and you could do in groups. It would take a lot organization but everyone could participate.  Think of it as DA's version of World of Warcraft or even Star Wars.  You'd get no end of people wanting to contribute to it.

And yes, it is the sort of thing that could be published as a series of digital anthologies. Downloads straight to Kindle and iBooks. Maybe even through MadeFire.

But it would be a MAMMOTH undertaking. Definitely something to think about.

well it would i gues i'll call it the DAverse, but ti would be an anthlogy seires that has a set of rules for the universe, and the goals could be maybe a man trying to  see his daughter in a far off land, or a begianning earth type era for soem stories, etc. like the twilight zone one conecting characterr maybe a group of four or five immortals are sorta the narroators of the stories, then let your imagnation go insane!

Yep, we'd definatly need someone to set the basic rules, or a few someone probs. Maybe it would be best if mulitple people set down rules after a discussion and then the rest would follow in order Would be fun

at the same time, some people are made to write, some to draw and paint, some to do both... I guess we can't purely do this in chaos... not speaking about languages. not all artists that would want to try can speak english... ah well organization organization the lovely horrible world. Good luck with whoever has to do that. hes in for a hell of a job

This is great news, wish I had some art to contribute to your wonderful book. I'm just learning digital art and mine would not be acceptable for a book, far from it. I wish you all the best and if I can be of any help, please let me know.

Not this time maybe but as you grow and develop who knows what form your art will take.

Thank you for the offer and I remember, no matter how good you get you'll always find someone you think is better than you.

Take care.

Wow, you're really giving back to the community.  Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. When the anthology's out, I can put a link to it on my comic's website and my Deviant journal if that would be a help.

That'd be great, thank you.

I don't think of it as giving back but just part of what we should all be doing no matter what level we're at.  Encouraging others to do better and organizing opportunities like this just makes the world richer.  Life shouldn't be a game of 'Hungry Hippos".

Yours,

It's a pleasure and an honor if I can help

Very true but I'm still impressed by it  Especially when someone established is willing to help those less established -

I mean, ulitmately the industry benefits but some professionals don't see it that way

Ah, "Hungry Hippos" - I remember that game. It often ended in recrimination and tears (mind you,

most games involving under-fives end that way )

Have a great day

Best Wishes
