Lon Chaney is without doubt, in my mind anyway, the greatest Phantom of them all.The original Universal film directed by Rupert Julian (the first major New Zealand director) of Gaston Leroux's book was fantastic. The mood and the lighting was insane.
This piece was mostly done in brush and I left it open because I am intending to go in and work on it some more with charcoal.

Lon Chaney freaking tortured his face for this part. And it looks oh-so-good.

To me, Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff are tied as best horror actors. Both are fantastic and had such wonderful faces.

This is the film that got me into both silent movies and Lon Chaney. When he comes out dressed as Poe's Red Death at the masquerade and the film briefly switches to color is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a movie.
