Description Don't think I ever uploaded this here, but for the Character Design Challenge on facebook, I tried to take a stab at the topic, "Vampires".Β

Probably did this last year sometime. Had fun trying out another interpretation of Count Dracula, this time very Mignola influenced! On the subject of Dracula, I do have a lineup of the main characters (protagonists only) from the original book sitting on my Hard Drive somewhere. Should upload it one of these days.Β

You gained all my respect by representating Dracula like Weege Vlad picture.

Β I must say that after having seen your depiction of The Count one would love to see your depictions of the other Dramatis Personae from DRACULA; may one please ask which of the characters you regard as Protagonists? (I suspect Mr & Mrs Harker, Jack Seward and possibly the good Professor Van Helsing but one cannot be certain - to my mind the novel is something of an ensemble piece so far as Heroes go).

I do have most of the characters finished, and as far as protagonists are concerned, mostly any major character that isn't Dracula, Renfield or the count's brides. A grouping of "the good guys" so to speak.

So, Mr. and Mrs. Harker, Van Helsing, Seward, Holmwood, Morris, and Lucy.Β

Β Yes, YES INDEED, I would love to see your rendition of the Harker Hunt (as well as their inspiration); as you might already have read, I'd love to see a little more emphasis on the Harkers et al as an ensemble, rather than Dracula as one of the Great Roles.

Β It might actually amuse you to learn that I tend to see Mr Quincey Morris as bearing a strong resemblance to Mr Patrick Wayne (mostly because his father's given name was Marion Morrison, but partly because I'm fairly convinced Mr Wayne the Younger would have been very much in Hammer's net so far as casting went - at least SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER makes me think so); for some reason I also imagine Doctor Seward looking rather like Mr Peter Cushing and the Hon. Arthur Holmwood as bearing a curious resemblance to Sir Christopher Lee (although one could not tell you why, except perhaps for the amusement value inherent in seeing Sir Christopher play a Vampire Hunter for once and Mr Cushing play a novice Vampire Hunter this time).Β  Β

Just submitted it actually!Β

I have an illustrated edition of the book by Barry Moser, and his depictions of many of the characters are pretty compelling. I think Quincey is depicted as a more burly all-american man, though still gentlemanly, though I can't recall if there's any illustrations of Holmwood. I do remember it saying that Holmwood could very well be Van Helsing's son, based on their similar looks and hair color. I imagine Seward looking like Paul Bettany, as he plays the cautious, thoughtful type of character well. (he's excellent in Master & Commander)

Β One imagines that, if nothing else, The Three Suitors offer an excellent opportunity for a casting director looking to draw a high proportion of Females to the audience - "Why are the all so PRETTY?!?" "Well we had to cast actors who could convincingly present a young woman some dilemma when forced to choose between them."Β Β

You definitely should!

This CDC thing is rigged, I tells ya!
It's always the same Pixar-ey concept art look that eventually wins the challenge.
And then there is that issue about unapproved posts.
But it is pretty fun to see various entries from around the world and winning really isn't everything, after all.

Deimos-Remus In reply to darkchapel666 [2017-03-30 23:01:00 +0000 UTC]

For sure! There's one character in it that's not quite finished, but I should be able to add last touches on him pretty soon!Β

Ha, there's a lot of good art in there, but yeah, lots of the designs are very derivative. The Maori one especially, everyone's just looked like ripoffs of Disney's Moana, including the ones that won. There also seems to be an inconsistency when it comes to what pieces are deemed eligible to win. They claim to not be looking for pieces with full backgrounds, and have disqualified many for that, but others (with backgrounds) are fine for some reason.Β

darkchapel666 In reply to Deimos-Remus [2017-04-06 19:15:21 +0000 UTC]

Go for it, man!

I totally agree with that. The rules are only implemented out of convenience to deny or reject certain pieces. They also claim that any or all styles are welcomed but more recently two of my submissions never really appeared on the group page. They are quite selective at best and most of the winning pieces does carry that overly cute or overly detailed look to them. Bahhh, ah well! Which is why the Daily Doodle is my go to place for all my inspirational needs.

Ha, Daily Doodle has its own set of problems (many of them are terribly sanctimonious) but it's alright.

I am thinking of starting my own group on there sometime soon, bring some friends from DA and whatnot to get something bigger going, something a bit more critical and simultaneously open-minded to more approaches. I'll be sure to get you in on it as well!

I agree that tends to happen with large groups of artist most especially when there are younger artists involved. Everyone has their own opinions and egos to satisfy.

Please do so and hopefully I'd be more active and vocal on the said new group.

This looks great! I can definitely see the Mognola influence, you make it apparent but it doesn't feel derivative; more like a spin on his style. The coloring is also fantastic, dark and drab which fits the character nicely. I don't mean to pressure you, but personally I'd love to see the rest of these ^^. Keep up the good work friend!

No problem!

Yeah, totally! Β I guess it doesn't help modern vampires that their stories are pretty weak--usually just exploiting viewers' hormones for a quick buck. There are exceptions--30 Days of Night wasn't a great movie, but the vampires in it were pretty awesome! Β They actually remembered that vampires are supposed to be monsters.
