Description
Name: Xianfu Zhi yu
Area of Origin: China
The Xianfu-Zhiyu (possibly “father-fish” or “parent-fish”) is a creature that appears in the ancient Chinese text, the Shan Hai Jing, or The Classic of Mountains and Seas; a classical compilation of mythic flora and fauna from pre-Qin dynasty (221-206 BC) China. The Xianfu Zhi yu is said to have dwelled in the Yellow River, and its form resembles that of a carp with the body of a wild pig. Eating the meat of this creature is said to cure vomiting. An interesting comparison can be made with the Chinese finless porpoise, to which it has been nicknamed the “River Pig”.
Note: If anyone has a better English translation of the literal (or not literal) meaning of 'Xianfu Zhi Yu', I have no problems with changing the name/description to match the correct version of the name.
