So here's the painting process of my sci fi piece Spaceship Port

Basically pretty standard:

-thumbnails first
-color test
-values and forms with the help of various photos to help me have a starting point
-lots of lasso tool for the background structure and lots of perspective lines
-finally, its just majority straight up painting to finish

What I learned is that, it's better to spend more time on the lighting and the composition than rendering because it's what sells the artwork more... sadly, I did poorly on this one but whatever XD

*For those wondering,.. I did use google images of vacuums, engines, ships, etc. It is wrong and lazy BUT so long as there is no recognizable element remaining in the final image due to the amount of overpaint, then it is OK and borderline legal. Just don't do this for matte paintings because that's a different story. This is sort of a grey area in the concept art business but you will be surprised how many studios do this... in the end the safest way is to take your own photos or just use free photos available online too.. don't worry.. my other personal pieces didn't use this method and are all hand painted
