Description I believe this would be the correct category...
Anyway, natural ( and insufficient) light from a window. I liked the lines but, boy, the low light ( the picture was very dark) made my skin look terrible. And me, I like a good challange so I sat down, fiddled with adjustment layers and this is the result.
Like always, critique and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I especially need to know if the image is too light or too dar...I can't trust my monitor... it plays tricks on me.
This said, do enjoy

Edit: I changed the image a bit according to :devvarl:'s critique on the lack of black and white range.
Sorry that it will appear again in your message box.

First of all: this is a wonderful (self)portrait. emotive and tender. And I simply LOVE that kind of partial lighting!!
I think the result's great on monitors. black is black and the lights have still texture - there's nothing overexposured. The black seems definitely too strong for bubblejets, the transition between b&w could break out. I'm not sure what happens on a photo print though.

I did some similar shots but with artificial light. With the right white balance (and photoshop of course) it's no problem to let them look like natural light, I think.
I also learned that you need far more light than it appears on the image..

You might want to take a look at these two images >>

Thank you so much for the lenghty comment and nice words.

I looked at the photos you linked to and I really like the gritty feel of them and how dark they are.
On Chromatic Gloom II you (?) look a little bit like Mr. Smith from the Matrix

A good study in form, light and shadows... Nothing wrong with this at all. It's excellent... in fact it reminds me that I have a similar photo that I am thinking of submitting... of a similar style

With black and white photograph, you want a range of black and white (not trying to sound stupid or arrogant...). Some B/W photographers can get away with sharp contrasts of the two, but they may include some greys here and there. You have a lot of grey which makes the areas with grey a bit flat. You also lose the texture of your skin due to the grey. A stark contrast of the two wouldn't work here too well if you wanted to achieve a soft tone.

I like the shadows in this shot because it adds to what you are trying to present to the world, if you may. What I would recommend doing is to re-shoot with some different lighting (lamps can be useful, but you don't to over-dramatize the lighting) and keeping the same pose (I like the pose).

I hope this helps some!

Thank you for your critique I find it extremely useful.
You're right about the grey and I tried to fix it.

Valr In reply to Delen [2005-03-21 23:41:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad I could be of help! The fix adds some shadow in the skin area which add to the shot quite a bit. I don't know if I'd use that much contrast, personally. But in truth, it's all personal preference!

It's very hard to pose, let alone set up the whole thing. Some texture [grain of skin texture] of your surface of the skin kinda lost in the light and gray tones. I like the diagonal composition set up that segregates the dark and light of the whole image!

On my calibrated LG 795FT it looks just good On an uncalibrated Samsung Syncmaster it looks slightly too light...

Great shot. Sensuality all the way.

The strap on the shoulder is a little distracting tough... out of the atmosphere.

Suggestion: re-shot, place a white A4 in front of you... it should reflect SOME light (enough not to be too bright). Only the face misses some detail. A, and get rid of the strap

You know me Vladi, I'm not -big- on black and white photography, but I think you captured a very dramatic feel here that would be hard to create in colour. You should take pictures of someone other than yourself, or have someone take pictures of you, easier to get more dynmic angles that way.

i love the shading. the light looks good to me. and your skin looks good too. (did you end up fixing the terrible looking skin you refered to? cause it looks good) i really like that you can't see your eyes and you can just barely see the outline of one of them, it makes it so you can kinda put your own feelings into it.
