Near takes the opportunity to draw in a much needed breath, moving a hand away from his mouth, a faint smile still visible on his flushed features.

Mello sits up, smirking dowm at Near.

Eventually, Near pushes himself upright as well, ignoring the faint flustered feeling that the sight of Mello's smug expression admittedly brings. Still, his fingers begin toying with his hair, a habit that grows especially prominent when he is slightly embarrassed. "Satisfied?"

Mello sat back down on the couch. "Very."

"Good for you, then," Near remarked, no real hint of displeasure in his tone as he picked up the box of playing cards and resumed placing them back inside. Embarrassing though it may be, if it was Mello, he found that he didn't mind so much.
...that realization only made it more embarrassing, of course.

Mello noticed the hints of red on Near's cheeks and smirked. "Now who's the embarrased one?"

His eyes purposely avoided Mello's gaze and he continued twirling a lock of his white hair around his fingers. "...I would be lying if I said that wasn't the case," Near admitted.

Mello was now satisfied, closing his eyes and leaning back.

Once the rest of the playing cards were safely within their box, Near's eyes wandered back to Mello and gazed at him thoughtfully for a few moments. Then, extraordinarily, he slowly rose from his spot on the floor and wordlessly joined him on the couchβstill keeping a respectable distance between the two of them, of course.
He figured the blond would prefer that.

Mello felt the weight as Near sat near him(no pun intended) and decided to keep his eyes shut. His shirt rid up a little from him leaning back.

There was no hint of mischievous in his expression while Near silently observed him, only faint curiosityβit's the same feeling that had initially prompted him to reach out and brush his fingers against Mello's scars. He noticed, then, that the scars weren't limited to just his facial features and how they also lined the left side of his torso, though not as prominently. It's this in mind that had him drawing his hand closer once more, just to lightly touch with his fingertips in a manner that's nothing but pure curiosity.

Mello jerked away, eyes snapping open in surprise.

Near's own eyes widened and his own hand was quickly retracted; silently, he berated himself for acting without considering the consequences. This is twice he's touched Mello and the younger detective expected nothing short of his anger. "Ah...I'm sorry."

Mello closed his eyes again, honestly too tired to take vengeance. "Whatever...."

He's relieved whenever Mello doesn't get angry, and Near breathed out a mostly inaudible sigh; the desire to touch him was still there, but the risk that accompanied it...then, he realized, he could just ask. The most to fear was a "no," and while that wasn't a favorable answer, it wasn't once that he should be frightened by. Did he dare?
...yes, he did.
"...Mello," he began, slightly hesitant, "Can I...feel your scars?"

Mello opened one eye, staring at Near. He was rather shocked. Normally he would only let Matt touch them, but for some reason he felt himself say, "I guess."

There's a flicker of surprise in Near's expression and he couldn't help the faint, almost excited smile that formed on his lips. "Thank you," he spoke, shifting closer to the blond, then tentatively reaching out and brushing his fingertips lightly against Mello's cheek with nothing short of fascination.

Mello almost relaxed into the touch, but refused to show a physical weakness.

Near was almost bashful in his touches, wanting to rest his palm against the scarred portion of Mello's face, but timidly only allowing his fingertips to brush and feel the texture. With his free hand, he toyed with his hair still, seeming enthralled.

Mello bit the inside of his lip, almost shivering as his scars where touched.

Near paused in his touches for a brief moment, gazing at Mello thoughtfully, though his fingers still lingered against the blond's cheek. "...is this alright?" he inquired, his tone quiet. Under most circumstances, after all, he knew that the other would have denied his touch, and while being allowed was a pleasant surprise, he couldn't help but ponder the thoughts running through his mind as he did so...

"Just get it over with." Mello mumbled, shifting as his shirt rode up more.

A nod is given in response, and tentatively Near's fingers traced lower, grazing over the scarred portions of the blonde's neck.

Mello let a small chuckle slip out.

Near blinked, the movements of his fingers pausing briefly and there's a slight tilt of his head given. Still, Mello hadn't demanded that he cease the action, so he traced his fingers further down and let them graze the blond's collarbone.

Mello eases back up and relaxes once more.

He's curious, and it's obvious in the way his fingers moving, tracing the line of his collarbone to where the skin eventually became more smooth and Near found himself fascinated by the difference. "...you're warm," he found himself offhandedly remarking, his skin indeed quite warm to the younger detective's slightly chilled touch.

Mello's face flushed ever so slightly, but he sat still.

Near hadn't taken into account the difference in their body temperatures before, though it wasn't particularly surprising. His fingers paused in their stride whenever they reached the hem of Mello's shirt, and he briefly retracted them...only to place them upon the visible scars from where his top had risen. He didn't move them, though, instead gazing at the blond silently in expectation; after all, he'd flinched away from his touch last time, so he awaited any sort of confirmation or rejection.

Mello tensed up a little, but shut his eyes.

Although Mello hadn't outright flinched from him this time, the way he tensed in response still wasn't very promising...it's possible that the area was tender, Near acknowledged, and thus might be uncomfortable with it being touched With this in mind, he reluctantly retracted his hand...

Mello opened his eyes again, looking quizically at Near.

That made him pause and Near blinked in response, head tilting the slightest bit. "...you don't mind?"

"If I minded you would have a gun pointed at your head." Mello said in a dull tone.

Near actually almost snickered at that. Almost. At the very least, however, a faint, amused smile formed on his features and he reached out, brushing his fingers against the scarred portion of Mello's torso once more.

"...does it hurt you?" Near inquired curiously, his fingertips only just grazing the scars as they wandered upwards, though no further than the skin that was already visible.

There's a brief moment where Near paused, the gears almost visibly turning in his head before realization shone on his face. "Ah, I see..." He wasn't wrong in his assumption that the area was tender, then; it simply wasn't pain that the action caused...

Mello sent a small glare Near's way. "Don't even think about it."

Near shook his head. "I wont," he assured, placing his palm flat against the scars and caressing in a way that would, hopefully, be less ticklish.

Near found it very curious that, despite his misgivings, he didn't shove his hands away...but, if Mello wasn't going to complain, he wouldn't say anything. Instead, he allowed his hand to wander slightly upwards, caressing the scarred skin a little with his thumb.

Cute. That's the first thought that entered Near's mind and it almost has his lips quirk upward into a slight smile. He applies a bit more pressure in his touches, his hands wandering just a bit beneath Mello's shirt.
Unlike the blond, however, he's not quite bold enough to just shove his hands beneath the fabric.

Mello squirms away. "N-Near..."

Near pauses and blinks, drawing his hand back a little. "Ah...was that too far?"

Mello was determained not to let his rival best him. "Not at all....."

A brow was raised slightly in mild confusion, but he placed his hand back upon Mello's side, nonetheless. His fingers traced over where the scars slightly covered his abdomen. "If you say so..."
