My knight is operating on the assumption that Bechamel is female. If he's wrong, we'll all look back on this and laugh.Either way, chivalry lives on in the Spiral Knights!

I always considered the Knights to be genderless, with some knights having a more feminine look and others a more masculine one. I also thought Bechamel was female when I first saw him, but can you blame me? He's got a girly hairstyle, a flower and a bow (oh yeah, and his armor is purple)!

Nah, the wiki's neutral about it. It was never confirmed one way or the other.
I figure they wanted a female stylist knight -- someone with her own personal flair, to epitomise the "make your own style" attitude of accessories -- so they gave her a distinct look. They tried to make her feminine, but since it didn't fall into pigtails/ponytail, people got confused.
Consider that hairstyle is pretty much the only way of determining genders in SK, and consider that the hairstyle here is much more distinctly feminine. If Three Rings were playing into the "gay male hairstylist" stereotype, going the opposite direction with the one defining gender trait wouldn't be the way to do it!
