Description Finally got down to New Mexico's Karl G. Janskey VLA, the world's largest radio astronomy observatory. While a lot of other photography seemed to depict the site as a barren desert waste, I was actually impressed by the natural beauty of the surrounding valley.

That is some pretty rough looking railway lines. The right hand track looks higher than that on the left. You would have thought that with so much precision engineering going into the dishes, that they could have at least got the levels right for the tracks they run on. Especially given how top heavy the dishes are. Great shot by the way. I cannot get over how similar the scenery looks to some places here, despite being half a world away.

It may be a trick of the angle, because they would have some serious issues moving the dishes around on a regular basis if the tracks weren't equally level. They change the configuration of dishes quite often for different radio images.

spectacular shot!  Who ever heard of a gated fence across a rail line?  Some very interesting questions to ponder looking at this.

To be fair, the only rail vehicles that travel these lines are large platforms used to move the dish receivers.

That's quite a moving job.  I don't think you could use any lightweight metal in a structure that big so steel it is.  Calculate, calculate.  They must be using heavier duty rail ties than usual, I'll bet.
