Description I still have to design Asgore and Toriel.

Each character represents some kind of memory. Here are all of them in order;

  • Frisk- Memories in which merciful acts are comitted
  • Chara- Memories surrounding death
  • Asriel- Memories of lost loved ones
  • Papyrus- Memories of friends
  • Sans- Painful memories
  • Monster Kid- Childhood memories
  • Mettaton- His admirers' memories
  • Alphys- Memories of regrets
  • Undyne- Memories where she protects others
  • Flowey- Memories of Choice

I'm still figuring out what Asgore and Toriel represent.

They live off of the memories they represent. Through this, they also have limited power over said memories. The other inhabitants of Memorytale don't represent any particular memory, but all memories. However, they don't have power over these memories. A few of them can manipulate small memories, but there aren't many who can do so.
The ones who can manipulate major or specific memories join a group that protects those memories. The sign of this group is a slightly transparent scarf. Positive memories are represented by golden scarves, and negative memories are represented by a dark red scarf. If the memory can be both negative and positive, the scarf is half dark red, half gold.

Why Chara has dark brown bandanna, unlike everyone, even flowey?

They represent negative memories. The ones with half gold half brown represent memories that can be both positive and negative.

Em, first, why do they have only negative? Second, why others, mostly, have positive? And, like, is Lost loved ones are positive?

Technically, every single one of them must be double sided, like a coin.

If you don't mind, I suggest that probably golden should be something like healed, turned into bright experiences etc. And dark - one that are painful, regretful, negative. So I suggest that color depends on how they make them feel, and how they act based on them.

That’s a good idea! This whole AU is still a WIP (and a fun thing I’m doing as a test), so it’s not quite fully developed yet.

My original idea was for every negative side of a memory there’s a positive side. So with Papyrus, who represents memories about friends, there’s someone who represents memories of “bad” friendships. So each character represents one side of a memory. However, there are a few who have both sides (like Flowey).

They represent bad memories. So, things that you would want to forget or have nightmares about. I’m Chara’s case, they represent traumatic memories of death. Adriel’s the other side of those memories; the positive side. They all protect memories, just some prevent one from forgetting something that they WANT to forget. I chose things that relate to the original personalities of the characters, and most of them turned out positive.

Asriel represents keeping the memory of someone alive. He focuses on the positive aspects of their life.
