Description ohgodohgodohgod IT'S FINALLY DONE. *dies*

Let me tell ya something...those people...each and every one of them, and each and every chair...took FOREEVERRRRR to draw/color! Next time I mention having to draw a crowd of people, SOMEBODY SLAP ME.

I'm just glad this thing is finally done.

Inspired by some lovely people I know - Some peeps who worked in the industry that keep saying, "Ohgeeohgolly I don't know what you kids are going to do...print is dying and all..." and then the other peeps are my peers who look soooo disheartened and heartbroken when they hear this. I'm just sitting there thinkin' they're all a little nuts and wondering, "...Don't they know about the internet? Webcomics?!"

Print is not dead and is never going to die, guys. The industry of comics is changing, not dying. It's still just in the process of figuring things out. So stop freaking out and go with the flow, and keep making comics if its what you want to do <3

HAHAHAHAHA I LOVE IT. The reactions are classic (like the people standing out from their chairs as if to say, "LIES!")

This was a topic on the SJ forum. You should link this!

haha
this is fantastic. i love the colors, the expression and the composition
I guess as an illustration student, and as a traditional artist, it's like traditional is fading more to the digital. thankfully there's always an outlet hehe

Thanks!

yup. I think traditional is being more appreciated now because people are realizing that it is a different experience to look at/hold. I still work mostly digital because it's just my preference, but there's still something nice about doing traditional work from time to time

To play devil's advocate, though; how does one make a living through webcomics? Although I guess if that's not your concern, there's no real problem...

Many webcomic artists already have other jobs, and for them money isn't a concern - their priority is more with getting their story out there to share with others (as is the case with myself as well). If you comic has a successful fanbase, many make their money through merchandising - which includes books. It is getting even easier to get these things printed/made these days, with people using places like kickstarter to fundraise and sites like KaBlam which will print your comics at a pretty low cost. With 4DE being a new publisher focusing on printing popular webcomics, that's a new avenue which can be explored. Those who don't have other jobs usually freelance and do commission work, and often your comic is a good additional way to get yourself known out there.

The comic industry was never really high paying to begin with unless you were extremely popular, so things haven't really changed all that much in that regard. The difference is really that you can create the story you want without a publisher's consent, but at the cost of having to do more yourself to make your pay. However, you also get a more personal relationship with your fans, and I at least think webcomics is way cooler in that regard than just sending something straight to print. It's hard to make money, sure, but it was never easy to begin with!

This article makes a pretty good argument on the topic: [link]

This looks really nice and quite funny. I understand how they feel though. I'm studying to be a graphic designer and people keep telling me that print is dying. I prefer designing for print and I realized a lot of things are going digital, but I know that print will never truly be dead. We'll always have physical objects printed that need to be designed. Everything can't be digital. ^_^

Yes, definitely! Everything really can't be digital, and there's just something really nice about holding something in your hands that's nicely printed...it's a very different experience.

Nicely printed stuff is just wonderful. I think if everything ever was digital we'd surely develop eye sight problems among other things.

Indeed! I have one teacher who would probably be ecstatic is some things were purely digital, but I still like having nicely printed things I can look at instead...screens really hurt my eyes after a while D: Maybe if they become kinder on the eyes like a kindles' screen, than it won't be so bad...but I'm not sure how effective that would be with color. Probably not very.

The screen hurts my eyes after a while too. That's why my brightness is usually low. I think that altering screens would probably effect the colors a lot too so they'd have to be careful about that.
