Description
As soon as I saw the letter on my table, I genuinely considered simply closing the office for the month and taking a trip down south to the warm beaches. However, one does not simply ignore St. Nick and whatever he had to say. With a resigned sigh, I cut open the letter and began to read it.
Turns out that it wasn’t the jolly fellow asking for another favor but more of a heads up regarding a disturbance over in the Otherworlds. You might be wondering what that place is. Well to make it simple, it is one of the many parallel realities existing within Earth. Imagine an onion and consider that each layer is a different realm yet occupying the same nexus. It’s how a multitude of domains and realms can exist at the same time. One layer you have the Fae courts, the next door over is Tartarus, and next could be another well-known place of legend.
As far as anyone can guess, the Otherworlds is nigh infinite, spanning vast expanse and containing many supernatural domains mentioned in different cultures. The only thing separating each layer is what’s known as the Veil, a barrier of sorts that keeps each realm separated. It extends to the mortal world, serving as a supernatural force that distorts mortal sights from perceiving such things as supernatural beings, monsters, gods, you get the gist of it. Of course there are certain humans with the gift of Sight that can see past the Veil. Some consider it a gift, others an unwanted curse.
However, there are times when realms can overlap and you get loopholes that beings can slip through.
This was how me and Providence found ourselves traversing Jotunheim on a hunt for a being that if left alone could prove to be one hell of a problem no matter which realm it ends up in. I’ve faced countless beasties throughout my career but this one was definitely a first. The reason being that someone or something decided to reanimate a dead Jötunn into a Draugr and force the cursed spirit of a Wendigo into it. Now individually, each creature is a problem. You mix them together into an unholy love child and well, shit tends to escalate really quickly.
Not for the first time, I was thankful for Providence’s assistance in taking down the beast. And as much as this investigation was a pain to do, St. Nick offering his assistance more than made up for it. I mean, it’s not everyday you get a chance to ride on one of Santa’s reindeers. I don’t know about you but riding Vixen as a war mount is something straight from unbridled childhood fantasy. She sure as hell did a number on the creature with her speed and magic. Guess that explains how St. Nick can do what he does, given he has nine of these beauties pulling his sleigh.
Still, even as we dealt with the creature, worry still lingered. There was someone out there playing Frankenstein with dangerous entities and they are doing one hell of a job covering their tracks. Never a boring day in this line of work, I suppose.
Anyways, I’m spending at least an hour in a warm bath back home. Lord knows I was freezing my ass off back in Jotunheim.
