Description

Octavia’s Journal Entry:

Not all cases I’ve had the pleasure of accepting take place within New Luxerion’s concrete jungle. Sometimes I have to haul ass outside the city’s grounds. Take this case for example, which came from various unexplained sightings over at Carranoque Trail, a hiking path just outside of New Luxerion. All the witness’ reports mentioned the same thing. A momentary flash of gold and otherworldly color accompanied by the sound of shattering glass and an animalistic cry meshed with high-pitched chattering and a powerful gale passing through a forest of pines. Needless to say, reports of the sightings did a fine job of scaring away potential visitors. Add to that discoveries of mutilated bodies of local wildlife and missing hikers, and you got yourself a recipe for disaster.

And it was so that I found myself, accompanied by Providence, on the Carranoque Trail. Visiting the areas where the sightings were made, Providence was able to scrutinize the lingering traces of unnatural presence. Calia’s hunting lessons served me well as I was able to survey the area and found traces of that which passed through. Its tracks were unnatural in that where it passed, the stones, the foliage, and the ground were warped. Providence came upon the same conclusion as I had once he’d finished analyzing the lingering traces. Whatever this was, it had the traces of an Outerworlder.

Providence was able to cast a sort of tracking spell which pointed us towards whatever had left the tracks. Two hours is how long it took to track it down. Once it realized we were on its trail and that Providence had a lock onto it, the being dropped its reality cloak, and we were able to see it for what it truly was. At first glance, it resembled a semblance of a deer. All similarities ended there however, as its form was revealed. Large as a stallion with exoskeleton-like plating that shimmered and glowed with unearthly color, parts of its exposed skin glowed in alien translucent, and its head was adorned with curving golden horns that were unlike any that belonged to Earth’s natural fauna. It moved with unnatural speed paired with an ability to blink in and out of reality, making it all the more of a challenge to pin down. It fought at first, trying to overpower us with its speed and larger frame. Yet when Providence and I proved to be harder to deal with than the average hikers, it turned to flee.

It took another half hour to chase it down through Carranoque Trail before Providence was able to finally pin it down with a binding spell. Dispatching it from there proved to be easier after its speed and ability were rendered null.

It was later on after Providence was able to get a proper look at its remains as well as help from Calia that we were able to identify it. It was a Ceryneian Hind, or used to be one before it had been warped and corrupted. The Ceryneian Hind was an animal sacred to Artemis, Greek goddess of the hunt and moon, a female deer that had the golden antlers of a stag. I remembered it being in one of Heracles’ labors as well, thankfully I had Providence to help pin it down. I dread to think of the idea of chasing it down for a year, like I’m all for killer cardio but one year of tracking and running, no thank you.

Though this case is considered close, it still has me worried. Monsters and supernatural creatures are one thing to worry about, but Outerworld incidents are an entirely different thing. One group exists in this realm, this reality. But Outerworlders on the other hand are an entirely alien existence. They are not bound to the laws that govern this world and thus are on another different level of threat severity.

At least this case isn’t all doom and gloom. Because hey, I get to keep two golden antlers as trophies. I’d probably try to pawn it off or get Calia to do it, but then again that might earn the ire of a certain Greek goddess, and I’d rather not deal with that pantheon.
