I've never been to NYC, but that amazing PBS docu-film called NewYork by Ric Burns figures this building alot.
During construction, onlookers would camp-out across the street waiting for it to fall down.

Seek-out that docu-film (it's a DVD boxset); it's FILLED with old photography. I salivate when I watch it. And some historical fact is good fibre for your melon.
