Heavily influenced by some of the work of *baspunk who is an expert at this sort of thing.
I wanted to keep the detail of the flower only and lose everything else. I have learned that the secret to it is take a close up photograph with a Macro lens at F5.6 or lower. I think if I remember correctly you do a similar thing with still life/objects. Then the background blends better with the textures. I put the texture as the top layer on this. Meaning the white shows up more against the dark background and very little against the bright flower. I think from what I can gather from other peoples work that this works best in B&W

Oh wow!! Love this!!
I HATE flowers in general but the scratchy background, the faded warmth and the ominous edges are fantastic!!
Something magic about the white and purple isn't lost even with all the murkiness.
Stark highlights are all in the right places.

Hey, you are on the right track it sounds like!
I would have probably done the lazy thing and added a layer of HardLight
or Dodge over top of the original, then tool-burned the edges on to get that "bang" on the petals.
The black and white approach is ace!
