Painted on a fold away box over the chess board on the top and the bottom - hence the line down the middle where the 2 sides of the box join when the box is fully open. You can make out the chess squares at the bottom right it you look at the full view.

I messed up big time with the nose - i hope it doesn't look too odd!!!
