i think the best thing to do is to just experiment and see what works for you. I tend to use the colour thick out of the tube then water it down on the paper and dab it off a bit in places with kitchen towel. I also use just keep adding water to the brush to get the lighter tones wiping it on paper.

Enjoy yourself is the best tip I think and don't be afraid to use lots of water on it
