Description I had fun with this lil' fella---I love the mix of the white hair with that blue for winter faeries. See, he's got a print of the a snowflake, and he examines every snowflake before it gets sent out---quality control person---to make sure it's perfect.

..never mind that there's no way he could have one photo of one snowflake and have all the other snowflakes match it, 'cause that isn't the way snowflakes work..but anyways. His wings are made using Katherine Dewey's cicada wing pattern, I edited 'em in Gimp for the colors, printed 'em onto vellum, finished 'em up with a coat of gloss lacquer and a dusting of interference blue Pearl Ex powder.

Body is made from a custom mix of PuppenFimo, according to Deb Woods' [ [link] ] recipe. Three fingers, a thumb and three toes...pointy ears and a funny nose/chin/cheeks. Naked as usual, no genitalia [I just haven't gotten to the point of being able to even think about sculpting that without cracking up].

Sold on eBay in 2005.

Thanks! He only took a few hours of work all told---not including baking time. The sculpting can take approximately 2-3 hours [more if you accidently smoosh some tiny detail in the midst of trying to get it sculpted, which is actually a fairly troublesome risk when sculpting something this smallish], and then the wingmaking a half hour, the accessorizing 5 minutes, and the hair 10-15-20 minutes. Hair is a bugger.

How small is he? How do you do that fine detail work? I know nothing of sculpting. Does he have a skeleton to support the clay?

He was perhaps an inch and a half, for just the clay [not the hair height]. Artists who have thinner, longer limbs use armature wire to help strengthen their sculpts, but I just generally make short, stocky limbs and use a strong, flexible clay for strength. So far it seems to work!

As for the fine detail work, to make the bellybutton, finger- and toe-nails, ear holes and nostrils, I use an earring to make the impressions...I also use rubber shapers [look on [link] ] for smoothing the clay, and then sometimes toothpicks or pins for other details. Oh, and I use a piece of bent stiff paper to make the wrinkles on the knees and elbows, then I blush all the wrinkles and lines on the body to draw attention to it...

I really need to get back to the clay. Eventually!

See I thought he was much bigger than a inch tall. Thank you for telling me the hows. I like to learn about different aspects of art. And yes, you do need to get back to clay. You have a talent for it!
