Description Why does Toothless care about ferrets? Well, he's a Dreamworks creation, and Dreamworks is stationed in California. Also, Toothless is so adorable and kind of slinky-like himself, so as far as I'm concerned, night furies are a distant cousin to ferrets.

Anyway, in case you didn't know, ferrets are illegal to own in California, which stinks because they're such awesome pets, and I'd love to get one myself, especially since my apartment is so tiny (can't though cause of this dumb law).

To find out more on the issue and what's currently being done to try and legalize ferrets, as well as see what you can do to help (even if you're not a California resident, you can still help), visit www.legalizeferrets.org

Also, if you're just going to comment on how you think ferrets are evil or make awful pets, don't bother. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but this is not the place to be holding a debate.

Chinchillas, too. I think. I don't think it's about danger. I think it's about not trading in exotic animals. I loved our little girl; she was a fabulous little ferret. But the ferret trade is horrendous. They de-scent and fix these little critters before they even hit the pet stores. If you're going to own a ferret, please get a rescue.

Also, here in Florida, there is an annual event where people can turn in their exotics without penalty. If you locate such an event in California, you just might be able to adopt a ferret that's already there.

More like "Legalize Ferrets Everywhere".

Over here in NYC they're banned too. Apparently they're 'wild animals' and are 'dangerous'.

..People are really stupid. They can't tell a domesticated animal from a wild one.

Toothless instantly reminded me of ferrets and cats when I saw the movie ^_^

That is a stupid law! Do they think ferrets are dangerous or something?

Ferrets and cats was exactly what I thought of too when I saw Toothless.

The main excuse they use for the law is that, because of the warm climate, they think that if people's ferrets got loose, they'd over populate and become a danger to the wildlife and vegetation. Domestic ferrets would never survive long in the wild though, and studies have been done to prove this. Along with that, ferrets aren't illegal in any of the other warm climate states and there's never been a ferret problem there (California and Hawaii are the only states they're illegal in).

The law was made a long time ago, back before we knew more about ferrets, and it's just never been changed since then, despite efforts to do so. We're trying to make another effort to change it though (you can read all about that on legalizeferrets.org) I'm hoping things work out this time. It'd be nice to have them legalized sometime in 2011.

That is such a ridiculous law. Ferrets are awesome! My sister used to have a pair, and I loved playing with them and am considering getting a couple myself in a few years.

This picture, however, is not ridiculous, unless you mean ridiculously adorable! Toothless + ferrets = <33

Aw, that's adorable!
California must have a thing against animals that look like Toothless; axolotls ([link] ) are illegal to own there as well.

vampirekittyduiva [2010-12-14 21:53:42 +0000 UTC]

I just thought they were fine to own in California as long as you didn't purchase them in the state. So as far as I knew, they were only illegal to sell here. But if they're illegal to own, then that really sucks. I've been wanting to own one someday. :/

DerangedBlackKitten In reply to vampirekittyduiva [2010-12-14 23:55:08 +0000 UTC]

That's a common misconception. I once had someone who worked at a pet store tell me the same thing, but they are illegal to own and there's always the risk of having them confiscated by the state (and that really all depends on luck. Some state officials don't always enforce the law. You might have someone come to your house, tell you that you have 'X' number of days to get your ferret out of California, and then they never check back up to see if you did so. But then you might get the person who will check back up or might even go as far as taking your ferret away from you)

It's all very sad, and it's why I'd never sneak one into the state myself. I wouldn't want to risk getting attached to one and then having to give it up later on. I mean, I know that ferrets don't live long, so that's going to happen anyway, but I wouldn't want to have to give up my alive and healthy ferret to the state or to California's ferret rescue program (the rescue program is nice enough to get confiscated ferrets out of California to other shelters so that they don't have to be euthanized).

Ferrets are illegal in California???

....

I was unaware.

We used to have a Ferret (I'm in Arizona). Her name was Fidget, and she was just so cute. Thennnn she got a tumor and we had to put her down. Apparently they're prone to tumors.

But I have to admit, every time I see Toothless creeping up to take the fish from Hiccup for the first time.... that distinct arching hump in his back always makes me think of a ferret. XD People say he's catlike; I'm like, no way, he's totally a ferret.

DerangedBlackKitten In reply to Contraltissimo [2010-12-15 18:27:47 +0000 UTC]

The more you know *rainbows* lol, but yeah, they're illegal in CA.

I'm sorry about your ferret, Fidget. My sister had a ferret several years back (I'm not originally from California), and he had to be put down because of cancer. Ferrets are prone to a lot of different diseases. It's a sad inevitability, but I'd still love to get one.

That arching of Toothless's back when he crept up to take the fish was totally what made me first think of him like a ferret! Haha, he's just so adorable.

Wow...I never knew that! That's ridiculous! I don't like owning rodents in general because they stink of their cages and I'd never want to clean them, but ferrets are awesome! A good friend of mine had one or two few years ago...got into all kinds of mischief XD

The drawing is really nice and cute Toothless IS rather ferret like
