Description I drew a thing!

Finally finished! This girl has been driving me mad for days, I just couldn't get her right. But finally I am happy with this one! And lookit, it even has a background! (Kinda...)

So this is Rune, odd looking creature that she is. Can't tell you alot about her yet, still properly forming the concept, but needless to say she's been giving me hell trying to draw this.

Again, critique would be greatly appreciated, particularly on the legs. Still not used to the backwardness yet. She hasn't scanned massively well, the colours are somewhat more vivid on paper. But meh. Don't care, happy with her nontheless.

Woot! *dances*

---
Rune is mine, please don't use her or this image for anything at all without my permission.

Edit: Altered the shading slightly so the dark bits are darker and the scan is more vivid and closer to the original picture now!

This is awesome- I love the colours.

Did you wind up doing anything with her, in the end?

Thanks! It was a fun colour scheme to work with.

Nah, not yet. She's still sat in a sketchbook with her. I have a couple of ideas, but have been too distracted to get them polished.

Thanks! It's the first time I've used my coloured pencils in a while, so I'm quite pleased with how the colouring turned out. I kinda want to dye my hair that colour now though.

welcome
I wanna dye my hair colours like this fox [link] but all those highlights would be expensive

That would look awesome, but yeah, probably kinda pricey. Ah well, when we both win the lottery?

I love Rune- she's so cool.
If you have any sketches of her, then can you email me them? Cause I'm going to draw her for my belated art trade with you (I suck, I know. )

Hee. Thanks hun! I like her too, can't get the silly creature out of my head though.

Sure, will do. Not sure how much use they'll be though... they're kinda crappy.

*pokes* Nah, you don't suck. How long did it take me to get round to replying to our RP? I think I suck! Also yay! Drawing Rune! I wanna see! *whines*

The colors have a lot more depth to them now, and they help define the shape of the character better, and make her really pop off the page. Definitely an excellent improvement!

Here's my take on "backwards" legs:

so, most people think that equine, ovine, bovine, (even feline and canine) etc legs are backwards, but they parts of their legs are just different lengths than those of human legs. If you break the leg down into parts based on where joints are, you get toe, foot, shin/calf, thigh. The same is true of all mammals. In the types of animals listed above, however, the most noticeable difference is that the foot is longer and that they are walking on their toes (which, as in the case of deer, for instance, are hooves). So, what looks like a backwards knee is actually the ankle. Yes, the ankle. The knee, in fact, is simply higher up on those animals and usually partially hidden by skin as it rests next to the side of the body.

Hope that made sense and/or helps.

That does make sense. I only meant backwards as an alternative to constantly attempting to write digitigrade really, my spelling isn't all that great and it's a pain to write each time.

I think I have most of the leg shape down ok here, I'm just not sure about the bit from what would be the ankle down. I think I may have gained an extra joint somewhere...

Hee hee. Don't worry, I'm dreadful with them. I think I type too quickly for my brain to catch up.

I have an alien race with backwards legs similar, (a couple, actually) I don't think that makes me any good at critiquing them, however.

I would suggest looking up bipeds which have legs like that. A great reference would probably be dinosaurs!

I can critique the coloring, however. It looks really nice so far, but to me it doesn't look great finished. I would suggest adding darker hues (dark purple, or dark blue) to the areas on her and the stump that would be hit by the least amount of light. This will help make the whole picture pop.

And to get colored pencils to scan better, I suggest buying a Lyra Splender. You use a Splender after you're completely done with the pencil work, to blend all of the colors together, and enhance the colors.
Here's what the look like: [link]

If you get one, you must press very hard to get it to work fully.

Hope this helped!

I did have a hunt, the biggest issue is I still wanted her to look quite elongated and elegant, and most quadrapeds have quite powerful, muscular back legs. I didn't try dinosaurs though, so I'll have a look, thanks!

I see what you mean, I'll have a go at adding some darker tones.

I'd never heard of one of those, I dunno if they sell them in the uk. I'll have a hunt though, my local art shop might have them.

Yes! It's very helpful, thank you! Mind if I bother you again when I've played with the shading?
