ephemeral half beings
stepping down cautiously
becoming more substantial
as they descend
step by step
till in the end
they are people

Interesting that the ladder treads become vague at the top, as if safe travel is not guaranteed, as if upward travel is not encouraged at all. The forbidden black gloom at the top is a further discouragement to reaching the celestial heights.

As I said smart gal. Now you hit the nail on the head. "The stairs up to heaven lead straight down to hell" (song line from a Procul Harum record) Someone said it remindend her of Beckett and his Godot. No heaven, no hope. I would say that heaven can be either in your mind and/or on earth.

I would agree with you on the heaven idea.

Very cool how the celestial ladder is so old and grungy. Are those icicles or stalactites or what on it?

Icicles. A very icy( spelling?) fire brigade ladder β yes!
Thanks Richard!

Thanks, Ed! Great use of that image. Ascending from solidity into ghostliness... and all very cold. ("Icy" is the correct spelling, too.)

The English language is a friendly monster!

A beast to be feared and loved.
When you spell it gives you hell
when you speak your vowels leak (?)
and when you snore you are a bore

There's an old joke that the English word "fish" can be spelled "ghoti" with the "gh" from "enough" and the "ti" from "motion" and the "o" from someplace I don't remember.
When we talk some of us squawk,
but we can sing like anything!

danke!
had you heard the ghoti joke before?

yupp, it is, supposedly, by george bernard shaw ... but i have never bothered to confirm that

RichardLeach In reply to KatDiestel [2009-10-05 15:44:41 +0000 UTC]
well, i'll be... wikipedia says it's often attributed to Shaw but came from someone earlier. i'm amazed at wikipedia, i use it often but it has entries i would not have expected. amazed at you, too!

Yes a fish can be slippery to handle, many different scales simultaneously in one song.
In Sweden childen say about the fish "abbore": How bany "b":s are the in the abbore? Two? No, ha, two in the word and one in the body. Ben means bone in Swedish!

Does it has something to do with led Zeppelin's song?

No its a ladder β not a stairway β but I thought of that song too,

Great. Makes me think of Samuel Beckett for some reason.

or a dead end? I am open to contact, ( Thats what i say at least) but still haven't heard from any ghost. spirits or godesses. I am not very spiritual right, more on the carnal side. But if the right spirit comes a long β who knows!

not exactly a "real spirit world". It's most an impression, a feeling...just somewhere but I don't know where... as a lost square
