It's been a while, but I finally got some more work done on Starswirl Academy. Here's a lineup of the mane 6, showcasing their designs thus far which are, by the way, not final at all. That said, it'd be nice to have some constructive criticism on this so that we can put together something everyone can enjoy.

We had an entire meeting to discuss the idea of a female protagonist, actually. Once we got talking though, we realized the conversation would be a short one.
Writing from a female's point of view would certainly be an interesting challenge to take on (seeing as all the writers are male so far), but in the end everyone quickly agreed to stick with a male main character. We also couldn't be sure which gender the community would prefer, and while we could fix this by allowing the player to choose their gender, that would make for a writing/coding nightmare.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. The story is based more on the interaction between the six girls and a main character separate from the player, rather than an OC-driven thing where the player is the main character. Bottom line is, our goal is to make it enjoyable for everyone, regardless of genders.

I was able to instantly identify all of the Mane 6...except Pinkie Pie. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize it was her (at first glance, I thought she was Apple Bloom, to my confusion), and even then, it wasn't through recognition, but by process of elimination.
I would say hers is the only design that really needs work; I know that having her hair be exactly like in the show would be very unrealistic, but it at least needs more volume and poof. A brighter shade of pink would also help, I think, as well as bluer eyes.
Still, these are all very cute designs, and I think you're definitely on the right track. My excitement about this game is through the roof!

Pinkie is getting a surprising amount of attention in this picture.
I'll be honest; I want to avoid sticking to a strictly pink hair colour, which is why I always add a little bit of red to it. Except this time around I may have done so without putting too much thought into it, so... she's accidentally a full-on red head now. I do want see what she looks like with a lighter shade for her hair colour though. I agree that more pink, and more poof as well, would make for a far more convincing Pinkie.
This just being a sketch I'm not too concerned about colours so much as I am about the actual designs. Next time though, I'll see to it that there are some different and hopefully more appropriate colours there instead.

I'm looking forward to the gradual process of design tweaks. It will be fun, down the road, to see how the individual characters evolved from concept to final incarnation.
Also, despite my critiques, I still want to hug ALL of the characters in that picture to death (figuratively speaking, of course

I think Fluttershy and Applejack work really, really well; Twilight and Rarity are very good too.
I'd say RD and Pinkie could be improved a little, though. Pinkie looks a little childish, probably due to a combination of her short hair and her more dynamic pose; I think longer, looser hair and a personality conveyed more through head and upper body language would feel more like the way she's presented in the show. As for RD, the body language is perfect but her small, angled-down eyes combined with her thin eyebrows make her look kind of fierce, maybe even mean. If I saw her staring at me like that I'd be downright terrified....
Anyway, really good work; I look forward to seeing more!

Pinkie is going to be needing a lot of work for sure. I do think RD should have some kind of drive in her eyes, but I'll try avoid making her look scary, haha.

My one complaint really would be that Pinkie's hair looks almost nothing like it does in the show. She could probably use a bit more of it or increase the size of those pig tails since they seem the token nod to her show style. The rest are all pretty good though.

Love these designs! One thing I might change is Fluttershy's hair. It seems to be parted in the middle which is cool but I thought that her hair might be parted on a certain side to look more like the pony version. That's just my 2 cents, but it will still look fantastic any which way you make it.
Also as a side note:
Please don't change Rarity! She looks amazing and it captures her character really well.

These are some really good designs, but one thing is bugging me. To me at least, Pinkie's pig tails make her look younger than everybody else. Like I said, it may just be me, but everything else looks amazing. I really hope that Starswirl Academy can get featured on EQD when it comes out!

I'll likely try giving Pinkie poofier hair, as well as make it a little more pink, too. Pink poofiness is what constitutes Pinkie, after all! Amongst other things.

Hm...constructive criticism...I think I only have one thing. I'm not sure what the uniform regulations are in the universe of Starswirl Academy, but it looks like Rarity is wearing earrings so perhaps Pinkie could have something too? I think she might have something quirky about her uniform to sort of add her own flare to it, sort of like how in some anime, in a school with ties, the girls will sometimes tie them into bows to look cuter. Other than that, I have no other suggestions, everyone looks fantastic, and I really like the lax way AJ wears her uniform.

I would love to find some way to make each uniform just a teeny bit unique to each character. I think I'm going to fiddle around with their bows and see what I can come up with. Maybe Rarity would have a little gem attached to hers.

So far all of them are looking great,but I feel you need to tweak Pinkie Pie up a little more,but thats about it.Anyways,I think your doing a great job drawing all the mane six and I hope the project comes out great!

rd needs a different outfit, maybe a track suit, or some visible bike shorts, and rarity lacks eyeshadow, perhaps even lipstick.

But other than that, don't worry. Each character should have at least one alternate costume, and something sporty like a track suit or athletic shorts will definitely be Dash's.

So far there isn't a design for the boys' uniform. That will likely come later on when we start fleshing out the protagonist and the other male characters some more.
