Fairy Tale of a Moonlit Night

Leo had to stay home, for his fever had gotten worse! The doctor wasn't sure what he had yet, but he recommended rest, and keeping him away from the other children, just in case! So Leo was lonely in his room, but he wasn't bored... now he finally had the chance to devour all those old books that his grandad had kept around before passing away! The one that interested him the most had some very cool monsters, chimeras and dragons, it was a book about the mythology of the ancient greek-roman world!

As the night darkened and the Moon rose over the purple horizon, Leo looked at her... at the Moon, with dreamy eyes, still feverish, he remembered all that he had read that day, about the gods of the stars, the night and space, called the Titans: Helios of the Sun, the titaness Asteria of the shooting stars and her daughter Hecate of the witches and wish granting, Atlas the titan of the constellations and his daughters the star nymphs who were like little fairies dancing around the great deities of the night sky,  Selene of the Moon and Eos of the Dawn, and he also read about the playful affairs and incantations with which they had bewitched earthly princes like Endymion and Tithonus, leaving a mark on both myths and legends.

His imagination ran wild like a fire, fed by all the mythology and fantasy he had read that day! Soon enough he could imagine the great Queen of All Fairies and Star Nymphs, sitting on the Moon. He imagined the great Titania, the Great Lady combining all the oracules and wish granting of Asteria, the fiery torches, magical wands and bewitching spells of Hecate, the beautiful wings and romantic incantations of Eos, and the royalty, jewels and horned crown of Selene. The poor boy almost fell out of the window, trying to reach the great goddess that his mind had just conjured out of all that myth he digested! He soon was back to his bed, he didn't want to sleep, he wanted to watch the Moon in her dress of clouds and sparkling stars rising above the nightly horizon, but the fever continued, and very soon he was feeling so tired and sleepy, until his eyes closed.

When he opened his eyes, he was on the hill in front of the house. "AH! How did I get here?" he wondered for a moment. He gasped, as a shooting star passed very close! Then he saw many more of them, which were falling upon the forest of bushes and hilly grass around him! He looked up, and there she was, the smiling queen he had imagined, sitting on the Moon, with her horned crown, her dress adorned with stars and half moon jewels, she was waving her fiery royal torch, each flame from this pagan scepter releasing blazing sparks that became another wave of shooting stars raining upon him. "Ask for a wish, and it will be granted" she asked. But he couldn't think of any wish, all he wanted was in front of him, all the beauty and magic, all the delicious mythology he had devoured all day, all the fiery shooting stars now raining around him. All he wanted was to be like one of those princes of mythology who had a date with the titanesses of the night.

The next morning, he felt better than ever, the fever had stopped, and very soon he would be able to play with ther other kids again. But as he readied to go out, he looked at himself in the mirror, and noticed a strange mark, shaped like a star, burned into his neck. Was last night not a dream? Did he really meet the Queen of All Faes? Did one of the shooting stars touch his neck, leaving that burn there? He dismissed it at first, nothing will come out of it, he was sure. But as soon as he came out to play, his mother stopped him to say: "Wait! Someone left... something... for you... over the night". He fainted when he saw a huge silver pegasus with fairy wings in front of him! A note was hanging from the majestic white stallion "when you wish to come visit me again, just ride it!".

When he opened his eyes again, he was back on his bed. DAMN! Had that been a dream inside of a dream? Is he now awake for real? He ran to the mirror, to check if the star was still on his neck... may be it all had happened after all, and he had fainted for real! What do you think my dear friend? Did he find the star again on his neck? Are Fairies and the Gods of the old Myths real? That is for you to decide!
