Description
And another snapshot from Season 4 Episode 4 "Daring Don't".I've always been wondering how non-unicorn ponies in Equestria do all that fine manipulation stuff.
When I saw the answer actually being delivered by the original show, I was laughing my ass off. It's just so hilarious, I had to do it. It was only a few days later that I found out that these binary typewriters had their first appearance already long before in Season 2 "Ponyville Confidential".
As always: Free to use, SVG is here.
I used Inkscapes snap feature a lot in this one and even "Align and distribute". Wow. Tell me if you find something that could be done better/quicker/more elegant.
[edit:]fixed some stuff.

I used a modified version of this as the illustration for the fifth chapter of a story I'm writing on Fimfiction . (Though I made it into a teletype, so I had to remove the best part. ) Just thought you might want to know.

Thanks for the heads up.

Well, if they write in Morse Code (Horse Code?), that would really explain why their type seems to be a lot of squiggly lines; it's just a representation of dots and dashes!

Hey, thanks for the heads up! I like it when people find my stuff useful. That's actually why I do this stuff.

You're welcome. Yeah, vectors like this are really helpful in videos.

I can't believe I never saw this before. The idea of Littlepip hacking away on this piece of technology is hilarious, no matter how improbable.

I always imagine that the ponies' typewriters work by Morse-code, or some variant thereof.Β

Seems like it would be a right pain to type with, though--get the rhythm wrong for just a bit, and not only do you make a typo (FAR more annoying on a typewriter than on a computer!) but you have to resume typing out the "code" mid-line or even mid-WORD, which could be jarring.
Thank God, Allah, Buddha, and Zeus we have hands! XD

That's strange. According to Duckduckgo's morse converter, both versions have the same result.

Realistically, typewriters for pony hooves would be the size of a teacher's desk.
Of course, most of the target audience doesn't even know what a typewriter is. Let alone be able to figure out what a desk sized keyboard typewriter is.

Hahaha! I wonder how it works... I mean, it wouldn't be able to type more than two letters unless there was some complicated thing they did with it... I dunno.

I guess they work like morse code. You push the keys 1 to 5 times to tell the machine what letter you want and pushing both keys at the same time writes the letter.

That sounds fairly reasonable, but it'd be pretty complicated xD

Still less complicated than binary.

Maybe Daring Do knows binary.

Eeeyup, kinda like that too.Β
Another idea would be that these are not simple buttons, but rather Digit-wheels that can be rotated to select a letter and then pushed to type it. Similar to the rotating interface in "Beyond good and Evil".

Maybe binary is part of standard Equestrian education.

Or maybe they just have a binary system of typing that isn't at all the same as our version of binary.

Like depending on how hard you push the key depends on the character that's typed onto the paper?
