I remember reading in Horst's profile that he had quite a few war injuries (maybe "a few" would be understating it). I like to imagine that his bad back and knee would sometimes act up during battle and he would come home afterwards in incredible pain. The REDs sometimes like to hit him in the back or the knee just to be extra mean

You are totally right about this.
His back and knee used to hurt during battle but his adrenaline levels are preventing him to feel too much pain.
What comes after battle.. well you know that already. "incredible pain." lol
So this is the main reason why he is more or less lazy after battles.
And yes, the REDs know how to make his job hard as possible.
