Sketch storm ftwDisclaimer: I am not a Protomen expert. I listen to their music, I've seen a lot of fanart for it, I am pessimistic that the fates will allow me to attend a concert.
It was inevitable I'd join this bandwagon. ^^ The awesome thing about the Protomen fandom is that their isn't really an official 'look;' each fanartist creates their own interpretation, which pressured me to attempt a character design that was both unique yet played homage to the games and to the Protomen universe.
I started on the right with a more realistic/western character designs. I liked the way they turned out, but I wasn't completely satisfied because it still looks like a guy/cyborg in a costume with a biker helmet, and I wanted something that looked more robotic.
On the side I began doodling a more stylized interpretation with exaggerated proportions, and was a lot happier with how it turned out. Would be easier to animate too. A triangle isn't the most elegant shape for Proto Man's visor, but it locked into place with the rest of the simplified design.
I experimented with several helmet designs on the left. No shield yet, maybe if I get closer to a finalized character design. Obvious error: I gave the one Protoman without an artillery weapon the ammunition belt. Doh!

Damn, the full face mask/helmet makes him look even more mysterious. I like it. XD And what the heckis with that gatling gun? That looks as merciless as hell. I like it! XD
I really should try listening to Protomen music. I've been hearing about em a lot ever since I started doing Rock Man fanart. D:

I love the music of the Protomen, but I really never got into the aesthetic. It's great for their band and how they perform, but the look doesn't really go with how I see the story. Really, it plays out more or less like the games mixed with some Ruby-Spears influence with, of course, the darker tone of the Protomen. I'm not really one to subscribe to the notion that a grittier look makes a grittier feel. I guess I'd look for middle ground more like you have.
Unfortunately for the Protomen, I've been smitten with The Megas recently and haven't listened to them as much.

I dont' really think there is suppose to be a set 'aesthetic' per say, or at least I wouldn't think they'd have one, because that would be branding which is kinda against the whole indie feel. I love what they do for their shows, and I love seeing alternate interpretations as well.

There's a feel to how fans seem to translate their universe outside of the live shows and it's just not for me when I'm really getting into the music. The whole "post apocalyptic" thing is beyond tired for me in how it's typically portrayed.
Never got into them or just never looked into them? For awhile, I was aware of them and just didn't really look much into them until another big Mega Man friend of mine tuned me into their "Get Acoustic" album around Mega Man 2 . . . and that's all she wrote. That album is fantastic and gives all these insanely poignant motivations and personalities to the MM2 Robot Masters (as well as Dr. Light and Mega Man) that I've gone so far as to put a permanent CD of it in my car for my daily commute. XD

They're the "gotta run gotta run now" Dr. Wily remix band, right? I've heard a few of their tunes, but I don't think it was for me.

I think you're thinking of one of their songs that they teamed up with brentalfloss who had added lyrics to the same song and then combined their lyrics into one song that they both performed. I only say so because the "gotta run gotta run now" lyric is from brentalfloss' version of the MM2 Wily's Castle music.

This is good, although I've got to say that I'm not too keen on the center design's helmet. Something about it just makes it seem like it would be the design of a generic soldier, not the one-and-only Protoman.

I agree with you, but I think that's part of the reason why I like the design, and that helmeted, pre-Wily Protoman would look ordinary. I don't think what made Protoman extraordinary was in his aesthetics, but his philosophy, and to quote his own words, 'a hero is just a man who knows he's free,' but he's also described as the perfect man and unbeatable machine, so its all up for interpretation.
But again, I don't know what the Protomen's official stance is on their creations, and I've always taken their work as allegorical anyway.

Oooh, that does make a lot of sense, actually. In reality, you're right, he wouldn't look extraordinary. But I suppose in an Epic story, the hero (or I suppose Anti-Hero) is supposed to stand out against the common enemy or allies?
