Description Due to public demand, I hereby present to you a nice bread bowl of sour rye soup (a Polish dish, as far as I understand from online sources) for this #Nomday . I hope you enjoy a deviation from the usual sweets I spoil you with. Pun intended.

Thank you for taking the time to post a critique. I do admit that it gives me a sense of having been rushed and unfocused. But not necessarily because of the values, but because of the lack of sharpness in the lines. Please do tell me more about what you mean with 'grouping values together'? I would really like to learn more.

You're welcome

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the lack of sharpness in the lines,Β
could you clarify a bit more?

Grouping values together means to simplify the picture.Β
It means that the lightest shadow is darker than the darkest light. Essentially you have certain value ranges for your shadows, your midtones and your lights. That way, you have more control of how you lead the eye around the picture, by omitting detail in areas of rest and putting more contrast in areas of interest.Β

Marco Bucci has a really nice video on that here:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nap7dw…
where he shows some examples of this.

Thank you for the explanation and resource.
I meant that when you have a clearer contrast between to areas, or when you use a hard brush, the drawing seems less fuzzy and more 'in focus'.

Thank you! I don't think I tried bread bowls either, but I understand from others that it's rather traditional for some meals, in some countries, so I would gladly give it a try.

Thank you! You know, I think this only works with the kind of bread that gets a crispy crust... And that's my favourite kind and part of bread, so... I liked making this. )

VladDerGraf [2019-02-11 22:04:19 +0000 UTC]

Nice, but what are the green thingies floating in ΕΌurek?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DesigningLua In reply to VladDerGraf [2019-02-12 20:19:44 +0000 UTC]

It's called zurek? How cool is that, I didn't know. I believe it is basil leaves. At least, that is what it looked like to me from the reference pictures... Is that a bad combination?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VladDerGraf In reply to DesigningLua [2019-02-13 19:30:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, actuallyΒ you don't put basil into ΕΌurek. The only green leaf in this soup could be a bay leaf. The other green herb could be marjoram, but it has small leaves. Anyway, ΕΌurek is the thing, especially the one made for Easter

DesigningLua In reply to VladDerGraf [2019-02-13 21:34:07 +0000 UTC]

DesigningLua In reply to VladDerGraf [2019-02-14 19:52:47 +0000 UTC]

I didn't realize how wrong it sounded when I wrote that down. Yes, fortunately, because Poland is wonderful... but unfortunate because I don't think I will get there any time soon That's what I meant by 'unfortunately'. No offence meant to Poland and to Polish people. It is actually on my list of countries to see.

Shotgunkite [2019-02-11 22:03:52 +0000 UTC]

You really nailed the coloration and texturing of the bread, completed in full by the shadow. I think that is the strongest combination I see here. Dont see bread drawn so often but its great stuff seeing home magical and heart filled dishes in artwork. Feels rustic and reminds me of home.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DesigningLua In reply to Shotgunkite [2019-02-12 20:23:19 +0000 UTC]

Aww... that's so sweet... I think of home when I see or smell fresh bread too, but oddly enough, the kind of bread you can usually find in my home country is rather bad quality, very white and artificially fluffy bread, which is not really that tasty. Sometimes, when you go to the countryside, you find people whoΒ bake fresh homemade bread every day and sell it in front of their home. That is more like the one in the picture, but I only had that when I went on holidays with my parents... so it's strange.
