The desert was silent and regrettably devoid of wind, the white kucrals above sang the death march of those that would trespass on the road of doomed men. Each footstep sank deeper into the sand, each lift and shrug of exhausted limbs pulled and gnawed at sore joints, the blazing star of white fire shown down on the dead desert like the wrathful eye of a God, burning the flesh and wringing precious strength from the wary and the damned beneath it. The clanking of the sword in the scabbard, the creaking of the gun at the back and the rustle of cloth could almost be mistaken for the funeral song of the birds in the distance but the trembling beneath the soldier’s boots, the sudden and subtle quaking of the earth… that could not be mistaken for the rustling of cloth, the creaking of the gun nor the clanking of the sword.
