Description
Life likes to follow patterns. If a trait works, run with it. If bones are a good idea, keep them. If rules are beneficial, use those as standards. Because of this, life frequently uses concepts like evolution, predation, and reproduction. It thus becomes predictable. Will there be decomposing masses of shambling flesh? Not likely. Will there be snake-spider hybrids with fireaxes for hands? Slim chance. But sometimes life throws a curveball. It operates using a different ruleset, or no ruleset at all. This can be dictated by a higher power, or it can happen spontaneously. The results are often referred to as monsters: odd creatures whos form and sometimes functionality seem otherworldly and even counterintuitive to the ways of those around them. They can be birthed illogically, act illogically, and have appearances ranging from improbable to impossible. Some, for example, are spiritual creatures spawned from primordial energy. Others are collections of conceptions that take form and mind, guided by some universal action. Still others are existing creatures parasitized by a foreign entity.. and so on... and so on. There is no limit to the many ways they can be formed and the ways they can express their agendas.
Some describe monsters as beings that are simply too different from the ecosystem in which they operate. They liken them to a radical version of an invasive species. Others argue for this ambiguous definition. They state that a monster is not merely something that is different. It is something that is different enough to be feared or loathed due to temperament, biology, or some other factor. Still others believe that is not enough. A monster must be something that is at an unnecessary advantage within its ecosystem - something too large, powerful, magical, or sinister to remain in check by nature. It must be something that exploits its environment; parasitizes it in a way that takes but does not give back. It cannot have explainable habits rendered equal by the presence of others. It must be an unnatural, inexplicable thing that works in support of itself without offering a clear benefit or sustainable exchange to the world it inhabits. In short, monsters must be the ultimate parasitic horrors. They must be organisms that 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵 at life to the detriment of others. Anything less, and they are merely displaced animals.
There is no limit to the arguments between what is a monster and what is not. The debates continue, and likely will forever.
