Steam Punk Game Ideas
The
story centers around two characters, Nicole Tesla and Thomas Psi. They are both apprentices at the University
of Technology, Science and Alchemy. They
are bitter rivals because of their different economic status and raging egos. They are studying electricity and steam power
respectively. They compose the two
characters that the player can choose from.
The Tesla Powered suit is fast, but with lower defense. It has long range attacks as well. The Steam Powered suit is slow, but powerful
and well defended. It has mainly short
range attacks.
The
setting of the story is an alternate universe Victorian England. The Heretics (aka the scientific community) escaped
from England and live on a floating continent called "Drift Haven". The continent was lifted through use of the
combination of steam power and electricity.
The Church of Seraphim has seen this as a direct challenge to their God,
as if the Heretics were trying to create a heaven on Earth for themselves. In truth however they see having "Drift
Haven" as a way of giving their eager believers a tangible glimpse of heaven,
so they seek to take it. For years
already the Church has forcefully taken technology created by the Heretics to
create "miracles" to fool its people.
The Seraphim have two classes of people.
The filthy rich who pose as the religious leaders, and the dirt poor who
they subjugate through religious doctrine.
The non-believers are cast into prison.
So of them managed to escape with the Heretics to start a new life on
"Drift Haven".
In the
outset of the story, the student's mentors Professor Von Steam and Doctor Gauss
are murdered by the seraphim and their research stolen, so they can build
weapons like theirs and come back to claim "Drift Haven" for their own. With their dying breathes they tell their
students where their ultimate creations the "Blitzsturm
Armor" and the "Gustaberg MK II" are located. So the two head out to claim the creations
before the Seraphim find them first.
They butt heads along the way, never getting along…sometimes even
fighting with one another. But
ultimately they find out that their mechs were built
to merge into the "Typhoon MK I" steam-tesla hybrid
mech. And together they are able to stop
the Seraphim and free the residents of England forever.
The two
characters are almost polar opposites.
Nicole Tesla is a spoiled tomboy princess who renounced the ways of the
Seraphim because of her scientific knack and because she tired of watching the
horrid atrocities committed in the name of Serra, the God of the Seraphim. Her parents didn't really support it either,
but they kept quiet. They miss their
daughter dearly. When she arrived on
"Drift Haven", she caught the eye of Doctor Gauss and began studying
electricity with him.
Thomas
Psi on the other hand was a hard worker for the Seraphim Church, working as an
engine man on their slave steam ship "The Inquisition". He tired of working under the Church and saw
through their thinly veiled slavery and sabotaged the ship and flew it to
"Drift Haven" so he could learn about steam technology without the limitations
of the Church. He is hot headed, brash,
and determined.

Pretty interesting. I can't even think of any steampunk games out there. What genre/play style do you have in mind?
Want suggestions for character design?
Plus I know quite a bit about Nicola Tesla's work, so I can contribute to some of the mad science. Shit, Tesla WAS a real-life mad scientist. He developed wireless power (and intended to use it to fly an airplane around the world... a plane with no engine or batteries aboard.), an earthquake generator that he demolished a building with (he commented that he could probably build one powerful enough to destroy the world. While the claim is ridiculous, nobody was stupid enough to dare him to try it.), a death ray that is today known as a particle beam (we're STILL trying to figure that one out, and he had it worked out in the 1930's. Too bad nobody paid him to build it.), and he's responsible for most modern electrical systems and early radio design. Amongst other things.
Which really gives a lot of inspiration for weapons/themes for a tomboy character based on him, especially if you give her some of his eccentric quirks for her personality.
Thomas Psi... inspired by Thomas Edison? Who had a real-life rivalry with Nicola Tesla?
