About two months ago, my interest in insulators was sparked again when I was looking for some radio equipment literature and stumbled across storm damage to overhead wires, with some mini suspension insulators.
SPONGEsulator would be used in telegraph and railway applications (don't get zapped, SPONGEsulator!)
