Description

My idealized Basil on the feast of spring.
Close up here .
***
Basil Lekapenos was a powerful eunuch and ruler of Byzantine empire. He was an illegitimate son of the Byzantine emperor Romanos I Lekapenos who served as the parakoimomenos and chief minister of the Byzantine Empire for most of the period 947–985, under emperors Constantine VII, Nikephoros II Phokas, John I Tzimiskes, and Basil II. His mother was a slave woman of "Scythian" (possibly implying Bulgarian) origin. And his father Romanos was of Armenian-Macedonian origin.
***
The history of Byzantium is dotted with examples of what some historians condemn as over-powerful eunuch courtiers, who attempted to dominate their rulers. From Chrysaphios in the fifth century, Euphratas under Justinian and Theodora, to Staurakios and Aetios, rivals for Empress Irene’s affections, Samonas in the ninth, Basil Lekapenos in the tenth, and John the orphanotrophos (in charge of the large Imperial Orphanage in Constantinople) in the eleventh, the list is extensive. Basil Lekapenos, an illegitimate son of Romanos I, known as ‘Nothos’ (‘the Bastard’), made a particularly successful career. After being castrated as a child to destroy any imperial ambitions he might have developed, he was appointed parakoimomenos by Constantine VII. He held on to great power through the rule of Nikephoros II and John I, and practically governed the empire during the first decade of Basil II’s reign (976–85). With his great wealth, he commissioned magnificent art objects such as the Limburg reliquary. He also wrote a treatise on naval battles and had it copied in a splendid manuscript of military Taktika.

In this respect, Basil Lekapenos was typical of several high-ranking eunuchs who became art patrons, diplomats, generals, administrators, teachers, writers, theologians and churchmen (plate 10). In many cases these officials were detached from their court duties to undertake particular missions, diplomatic or military, such as Andreas, who negotiated with the Arabs in the seventh century, or Theoktistos, who commanded the navy in the ninth century. In Byzantium, as in the caliphate, eunuchs regularly found employment as military generals and diplomats. Their high status is confirmed in the Book on the Interpretation of Dreams, written by a Christian Greek author, Achmet, who drew on Byzantine and Arabic sources as well as on his own dreams. In common with many authors, he equates beautiful eunuchs with angels. Both of course were considered sexless beings, since angels have no sex and eunuchs were supposed to have lost theirs.

As well as these high-ranking eunuch officials, others made careers far away from the Great Palace and imperial patronage. They appear incidentally in hagiographical sources, and sometimes feature on a list of wedding gifts, as in the story of Digenes Akrites, the frontier hero. When Digenes Akrites finally married the girl (she is never named), her eldest uncle presented them with ten boys:

Sexless and handsome with lovely long hair,
Clothed in a Persian dress of silken cloth
With fine and golden sleeves about their necks.

You've managed to capture the same feelings of regality and elegant refinement and sophistication from the ancient paintings of that era. Beautiful!

Basil looks surrealistically alive. The richness of feelings in his countenance and his remarkable strength of will make him to look like real. But his beauty is unearthly, heavenly beauty! A rebellious angel with magnetic gaze conveying his challenging strong character. Your new technique makes an astonishing impression! I am so so happy to see such a strikingly beautiful portrait of Basil and I am so so grateful to you for the hard work you put in this art. A great joyful surprise, this is the feeling that struck me when I saw your new painting! This masterpiece undoubtedly is created by Deva!

Thank you very much, your words as always make me very happy and inspiring
I'm very glad that I was able to give tribute to this great eunuch, worthy of the best art. I used a new drawing technique to imagine how Basil looked if he were here, real and alive.
It's amazing how subtle you are! I write a story about Basil, and there I compare his gaze with the look of archangel Lucifer, in which there was pride, great wisdom and a struggle of feelings. He was tossed between good and evil (in real history, Basil was indeed an ambiguous personality, he often had to choose between two fires. The man who stood on top of power for 40 years could not be spotless), and at the same time, deep down in his soul, he longed for love, understanding. His most important features were high spirituality and piety, he was strong and chaste. And this beauty, will, power, spiritual heights and wisdom conquered all around. Verily, he was the most regal of all the rulers of Byzantium, and historians consider the reign of Basil (and Joseph Bringas) to be the most prosperous in the history of the Byzantine Empire, and the rise of the empire was in all areas. So, this fact refutes the erroneous opinion that eunuchs can not rule well.

What an intense gaze~

Amazing improvement too! He looks so real on this one! Just like Bagoas, Basil holds a special place in my heart. He was the one that brought me here to this gallery a few years ago when I first saw this older portrait -> Basil

Thank you! I used a new technical style, I wanted to achieve a realistic, photographic effect, and at the same time transparent lightness like on classical paintings.
Oh, really? Very interesting!
Why do you like him? I'm curious why people prefer Basil from all the Byzantine eunuchs whom I paint . Probably, he has an extraordinary attraction and unique charm, like Bagoas

taiama In reply to Develv [2018-07-06 21:16:53 +0000 UTC]

Then you did a marvelous work, my friend! He looks exactly like that, a very photorealistic painting just like in the classics!

Well, before I came across that older portrait I had no idea who Basil Lekapenos was (and my macho man dominated country they teach us less about these things in history lessons and such...). And Bagoas I only knew from the Alexander movie (I had liked him so much! But couldn't say a word about it because everyone else who saw the movie with me called him such disrespectful things... poor Bagoas~ ;n; ). So after looking at your works I decided to learn more about them both, and in the way also learned about other eunuchs and other historical figures like Malik Kafur and the Dracula brothers and Mehmed (in the case of Elv's art). I think all these gentlemen were such extraordinary people! And definitely, Basil and Bagoas are very special. Not only they were incredibly beautiful, they did so many great things throughout their lifetime, whether they were good or bad choices, and they were so talented. Basil's achievements are so impressive! In my case, I may be a little more biased with them because they were the first two I learned about and grew so fond of~

Thank you very much for your interesting and detailed explanation, I'm really glad to hear that thanks to our creativity and articles people learn more about the truth about history, about the history of real, but forgotten people who are worthy of attention as well as other praised historical personalities (like Alexander the Great).
Male femininity and castration are two reasons why persons like Basil and Bagoas people say little. The society is still too conditioned, hetero-normative and gender-binary-normative.
But each of us can destroy this injustice by simply starting to say good about wonderful eunuchs like Basil and Bagoas, just start creating wonderful about them, and then the world change their views about eunuchs

Thank you! I studied miniature painting in Russia, such as Palekh, Kholui and Fedoskino, which have similar techniques from iconography. But it was a long time ago and simple drawings. Now I study Byzantine art with angels and classical painting ^^

miniature painting! wow, I did it with the class, at first everything went well, we'd be tempted to switch to "faces" of our neighbors instead of "saucers!" the noise was not quiet, and the teacher had just returned everything was as if nothing had happened, there was only one big "BUT" from head to waist was in the paint! GOD, YOU MUST HAVE SEEN HER FACE! after the lesson everyone just ran away with all the bullets, but did not want to talk to her (after the incident everything calmed down only after a month  )

Yeah, some eunuchs is very feminine or androgynous, they look like angels, sexless and androgyny.
Rather the opposite, the image of the angels in Byzantium, and then later in Europe was formed on the basis of the beauty of the best looking eunuchs, whose beauty fascinated the then people. In Byzantium it was the palace eunuchs, in Europe  it was castrati singers.

Thank you! Basil was excellent person and I want to give him tribute.
